I taught and discussed Shelley's novel with college freshmen for decades, and without fail, in the beginning they are confused and bemused: "who the heck is the monster?" They and I would then begin to read and discuss; who is Frankenstein? And they were some of the best discussions in the classroom because we were actually discovering together not the Frankenstein they had always heard about, but the one Shelley created. And why. So this beautiful film moved me to tears, and I knew my students would be thrilled that they understood how fine it is. Deepest respect goes to Writer/Director Del Toro; I think this is his greatest film in a brilliant career. And, except for leaving the "Dr" in, he also got Shelley's novel right as so many film versions have not. It's a beautiful, deeply moving film I would hope Shelley might like.

The perfect team, writer, stars, and adorable little doggo pull off a charming story about courage, love, and devotion. The friendships and love are warming, the patience and kindness people have with one another-and the valiant dog who turns his own tragedy into love and devotion for the man he follows as his rescuer and best friend-all convinces team and audience alike that-yes, they do: dogs and other best friends love us and know us better than we realize and will stay by our sides. As we'll do the same for them. The film is both satisfying and lovely.
