It's rare to come across a movie with quite so many bad reviews as this one. But in this instance, I can only say that they are well deserved. This really was one of the most bone crushingly tedious and aimless production that I've seen. Proper critics are fawning over this as if it's breaking new ground and doing imaginative things that no one else has ever done. Guys, the reason no one has done these things before is because there is no point. I don't expect every film I go to see to be crash bang wallop but there does need to be some emotional connection at some level. This just didn't have that, I couldn't care less about the character and neither it appears does the director care less about the viewer. One to swerve.
I very much enjoyed this gentle tale of intrigue and murder most foul. It really reminded me of the world of Twin Peaks, where nothing is really what it seems and you can't be sure of who anyone is or why they do what they do. There are so many unspoken elements of the production, that you're still guessing about elements of the story when the curtain closes.
However, that to me in a movie isn't necessarily a problem because not everything in life is neat and tidy anyway. There is some great acting and lovely cinematography and a nice seam of rich dark humour running through the affair. Slow paced but no less good for that.
