After witnessing his mother being raped and murdered by two thugs, a boy named "Christopher Vale" (Scott Nery) is left badly disfigured and is eventually committed to an insane asylum. Ten years later, he kills a couple of guards who were mocking him, and after escaping from the mental institution, he heads back to his childhood home. Meanwhile, a teenager named "David Baxter" (Derek Osedach) is hosting a Halloween costume party at his house and has invited several of his schoolmates. In addition to the party, David has planned a creepy prank to scare everyone attending. What he doesn't realize, however, is that the house he lives in was once the home of Chris Vale--and he's heading straight there. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will simply say that this film is an obvious low-budget version of the famous movie "Halloween," made almost 30 years earlier, but lacking the suspense, acting, drama, and a bit of the gore that made the original so fascinating. It also lacked any likeable characters. Be that as it may, I wasn't particularly impressed with this movie, and I have rated it accordingly.
"Marianne" (Anne-Marie Provencher) is an attractive young woman who supports her father and siblings by working in a Canadian textile factory during the day. Unfortunately, to keep her job, she is often forced to satisfy the sexual desires of her boss after work. Then one day, the decision is made to farm her out to a cruel pimp named "Dan Campbell" (Miguel Fernandes), who manages a sex-slavery operation for the mob. However, before she can be sent to one of the brothels, a former prostitute named "Cindy" (Andree Pelletier) suddenly arrives on the scene and relocates her to a safe place. Needless to say, this angers Dan, leading to hostility between him and Cindy, who becomes determined to shut down his operation by continuing to free as many young women as she can. Now, rather than reveal any more, I'll simply say this was an interesting sexploitation film from the 1970s that effectively used the Canadian setting to its advantage, with good performances by both Andree Pelletier and Anne-Marie Provencher. On a technical level, some scenes had poor lighting, and the actors' voices were muffled or subdued in several parts. That said, although I might have preferred a bit more drama or suspense here and there, the movie still passed the time reasonably well, and I rated it accordingly.
"Hildy Johnson" (Rosalind Russell) is a star reporter for a major New York City newspaper who decides to quit her job to marry her fiancé, "Bruce Baldwin" (Ralph Bellamy), and move to Albany to start a new life. Her boss, and former husband, "Walter Burns" (Cary Grant), has other plans and, being the unscrupulous editor he is, decides to use every trick he knows to keep Hildy at the paper. To do that, he manipulates Hildy into covering the story of a convicted murderer named "Earl Williams" (John Qualen), who is scheduled to be executed that night. Needless to say, since they were supposed to leave for Albany that evening, Hildy does everything she can to wrap up the story in time to catch the train. Unfortunately, both Walter Burns and Earl Williams have other ideas. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this remake of the 1931 film "The Front Page" is an extremely fast-paced comedy that hardly gives the viewer a chance to catch their breath, with Cary Grant being the primary catalyst. Be that as it may, it should be remembered that this movie is a remake of a fairly entertaining comedy from nine years earlier, and had I not seen that movie, I probably would have enjoyed it a bit more and rated it a little higher than I have.
