I remember seeing the series when it first aired in the 70s, this along with Blakes 7 were the highlights of my weekly viewing, both had compelling story lines and an immersive quality that time has not diluted. Indeed I've written this review more than 30 years after first seeing Secret Army having recently purchased the DVD box set.
The series regulars are superb and although in some episodes the extras' acting occasionally fell into Allo Allo territory this particular episode is not one of them. Scenes between the monks especially had an integrity and power that was truly exceptional, addressing complex philosophical and religious questions as easily as discussing the weather. Perhaps not that surprising given that the guest stars were classically trained stage actors.
A great series, worthy of multiple viewings.
