Everything about this movie seemed adeptly composed and well put together, but my question was 'why?'. I didn't understand the plot or the point of the movie, or what the creators were trying to achieve.
There have been other movies that I didn't quite 'get', but still enjoyed, and appreciated more after some post-watching googling. I can't say that for this one - the watch wasn't enjoyable and the googling yielded no satisfaction.
I wanted to like this movie, and generally like joaquin phoenix in movies despite not being sure about the pronunciation of his name. He was good but I still felt like they could have done more with him. He does a good job of playing a scared and anxious guy but nothing felt 'compelling' about his character.
I loved hereditary, which led me to watch Ari Aster with a keen eye. I liked Midsommar. This one was a bit of a turn-off for me, and will likely venture into the upcoming 'Eddington' with caution.

Thought the movie was 'okay' - enjoyed it slightly. But not so much as a movie, but more as a look into a different era and culture.
From the trailer, I had expected it to be a bit more frantic, with a more frequent use of retro visual effects, and scares.
The movie itself is slower, more gentle, and more sparse of the elements I was looking forward to from the trailer. There was a bit of humour, scares, and tension, but it felt like they could have done more with the runtime.
I didn't like the plot. The main story, and the sideplots, ended rather abruptly. The 'moral' of the story seemed like a non-sequitur to the story itself - maybe I just didn't get it.
The visible 'age' of the visual effects and backgrouds were a slight detraction from their otherwise dreamlike beauty.
I would love to see the result of a similar creative vision with modern technology and budgets. Although I didn't love the movie, I don't regret watching it, and am glad for the efforts, risk, and vision which brought it to the world.

Without spoiling it, I watched this movie after seeing a particularly iconic scene, only to find out it happens at the very end and plays a relatively minor role in the film. There is a particularly unnerving character who could have been made more ominous and relevant, but it ended up feeling like something stitched on as an afterthought.
As it says in the title, I thought several elements were clever and well-crafted. The movie depicts the main character's experiences in an surreal yet relatable way.
A lot of people consider that a movie's ability to make you uncomfortable or on edge to be a mark of quality, and I can understand that perspective. This movie does it very well and deals with some true-to-life taboo subjects in a believable way. However, the build of tension similarly builds up my expectations for some sort of satisfying culmination, like the thrilling downward rush of a rollercoaster following a gradual and tense ascent. The movie fails to deliver satisfaction. The main plot is resolved, and then you are presented with a notable, yet low-impact exposition in the 5 or 10 minutes after the story has basically ended. It would have been better if the secondary plot was given more of an unseen presence rather than being referred to in ambiguous terms.
