  • Incredibly haunting film

I think the low ratings are from people who can't sit still for longer than 4 minutes. This film has outstanding acting, fantastic cinematography and use of sound. It being based on a true crime case in Australia, makes it so much more heart wrenching. Viewers who aren't familiar with the case may not connect with the story as much, but every time they spoke about the victim I pictured poor Daniel's face.

Yes the film is slow, yes it's fairly long, but true film lovers will have no trouble watching it. If you're out for a cheap, quick thrill then maybe skip this, but be aware you're missing out on an artfully executed film. My recommendation would be to put your phone down, sit back, and soak in the atmospheric piece. It's not action or jump scare packed but it is incredibly tense and haunting in the way real life can be.

Again, shout out to the stellar performances from Joel Edgerton & Sean Harris, truly gripping!

  • I hate this place

A dull, pointless drama and nothing more. You won't be horrified or thrilled, and once the credits roll you'll think "what was the point of this?"

This film tried so hard to be edgy and dark but you're left unimpressed. A thug wearing a trench coat who happens to be a pensive, star gazing poet? A brooding mute with a lame one liner at the end? Groundbreaking.

It's writing and execution is amateurish, unfortunate as the story did have some potential. Most frustrating were ridiculous character choices, bad script writing, cringeworthy acting from the dad. I truly could not believe the parents had just suffered the most devastating loss imaginable and then carried on engaging with the criminals petty games. Don't waste your time, Killing Grounds is in the same vein but actually executes.

  • Slow yet gripping. Give it a go

Take your time with this. I expect most people who rated this poorly enjoy slasher or high octane horrors. Be aware it's a slow burn that doesn't end neatly or typically. But it's well worth it.

This film has got ghosts but the real horror lies in the inter generational violence towards women. The real fright is in men's attitude to their 'belongings' and what they feel entitled to take or break.

You can feel the knot in your stomach as the film goes on and you realise it's not about the ghosts but about who she realises she's living with. Also, well played by both lead actors.
