This is probably the best of all the filmation series and movies. By the time this came out the TV show to promote a toy line craze was winding down. Filmation realized the only way there were going to pull this out of the failure bin was the make changes. So unlike the weirdo cheesie Orko, Snarff, T-bop comic relief characters they came up with the Prarie People. These comic relief characters were actually useful and not hard to endure because they weren't just insipid.
Then the main characters and story had heft to them. Marshal Bravestarr was actually cool, kind, intelligent, spiritual and multidimensional. As were all the others like Shaman and Thirty Thirty. Even the female characters were practical, intelligent and skilled, not just a damsel in distress. The action scenes were great. The stories were a lot deeper than say, He Man or She Ra and the characters didn't always win and sometimes made mistakes. It was well rounded and a pleasure to watch.

It moves sooooo slow, like a half frozen salamander carrying a 3lb rock on its tiny fragile legs.
The casting seems a bit off too. I don't care for the lead at all. He's more annoying and unconvincing as a scholar. He is abrassive and sarcastic yet at the same time tries to convey wonder and skepticism but it just doesn't wash. He is flat and easily forgettable.
However, Elizabeth McGovern is wonderful as usual as a leader and scholar with a touch of humanity. But it all stops there.
We are supposed to care about what this group is doing, but I don't. There just isn't any "meat" to the story or why the Salamander views everything as a threat. What are the Supernaturals plans? What are the Salamanders plans? Does anyone even have a plan or reason for being on my screen? It doesn't feel like it.
It just feels empty and a big giant "Whatever". Skip it.
