They tried to tell too many stories at once. Pulling them together in a more timely manner would have helped.
I don't know where the blame for that lies. The screenwriter should have known better, abd tge director should have caught it. Both are equally guilty.
I expect better things of Costner. He's done some brilliant work in the past, so I can't imagine how he screwed this up so badly.
The acting was good. Nice characterization. That's not enough yo salvage it, though.
If you're in the mood for some beautiful scenery, wonderfully filmed abd don't mind wasting a bunch of time, give it a look.

The director, editor or both should go back to school.
I saw strong influences of Kurosawa in this film, with overtones of Peckinpah. The mix works surprisingly well.
Unfortunately the guys in the lead roles were not really up to the task. I realize that as acting styles vary in other countries, but these guys lacked credibility. Perhaps the echoes of Kurosawa had me looking for a Mifune.
