Not since "Breaking Bad" have I been this invested in a series. The story structure, script, cast and production are all first rate and it keeps you constantly on the edge of your seat. Yes the violence and sexual deviancy may be too much for some but it really paints a picture of the harsh world of 100 years ago whether in the cities or in the country. The good thing is that even some of the "bad characters" are relatable and whilst you hope for them to pay their dues in the end it shows how evil can be used to justify a so called "greater good". 1883 was a brilliant series on its own and Yellowstone was well worth watching but 1923 is the spine that binds the stories all together.
If you want to get an understanding about Darwinian Natural Selection and how it works then this is required viewing. Richard is wonderful as always in explaining in a matter of fact way how the process works. It's such a simple process but it's not intuitive and as such is very much misunderstood. Unfortunately it leads to most people thinking it's "survival of the fittest" when it's really about survival in the environment to maturity and ability to reproduce. I cannot recommend this documentary enough. Beautifully produced and directed - it should be shown in every school wherever science taught.
The Big Broadcast was the first major film of singing sensation Bing Crosby in which he had a starring role. Playing a fictional version of himself, Bing puts his comedic skills (that he had worked on for the shorts he made for Mack Sennett) to great use. The songs, direction by Frank Tuttle, the crazy special effects (that are amazing for 1932), and the list of famous radio stars of the day make this a really fun and entertaining film. This has recently been restored by UCLA but as yet there has been no official DVD release which is a pity. I rate this amongst the best of Bing's early films as it shows his complete naturalness in front of the camera whilst his renditions of Dinah, Here Lies Love and the hit song Please highlight his wonderful voice.
