  • Cult Masterpiece

Fincher's cult masterpiece has aged fascinatingly; watching it in my late 40s vs early 20s is a vastly different experience. Don't worry, Tyler Durden is still cool, and Ed Norton is still one of the best actors of his generation, but the depth to this film is more apparent the older I get.

Norton is the Narrator, an office-bound schlub with severe insomnia and an addiction to support groups. He soon meets two people who will change his life dramatically; Helena Bonham Carter's Marla and Brad Pitt's Tyler Durden. Both actors deliver an acting masterclass, particularly Pitt, who chews up every scene.

The film nails the 1999 era of confused masculinity, unrealised and largely undefined anger among young GenX males and the commercialisation of pretty much everything. And it's a wild, crazy and unpredictable journey, so strap in. 9/10.

  • Schlocky Brilliance

Schlocky brilliance from 1987, Robocop is uber-violent, uber-ridiculous and uber-entertaining. Peter Weller stars as Murphy, a beat cop who gets absolutely obliterated by a gang of lowlifes in one of the worst onscreen deaths imaginable.

Somehow the police salvage his shredded body and turn him into Robocop, a modern law enforcement Darth Vader kept alive by computers and baby food.

After a worrying lack of testing, Robicope is unleashed on the streets to clean up the never ending parade of scum taking over the city. Ludicrous fun 8/10.

  • The Talented Mr Keoghan

The parallels to Minghella's masterpiece have been well documented, but Saltburn is an altogether different beast. Barry Keoghan is staking his claim as a generational talent, managing to outact some serious thespians here, going toe to toe with Richard E Grant and Rosamund Pike.

Keoghan plays Oliver Quick, a nerdy schlub struggling to fit in at Oxford. He befriends the Dickie Greenleaf-esque Felix (Euphoria's Jacob Elordi) and manages to score an invite to his summer house to engage in Gatsby style debauchery with Felix's bizarre uber-rich family.

If you know Ripley, there are some familiar beats amongst the genuinely shocking scenes, elite performances and amazing cinematography. It won't be for everyone, but this is among the most unique films in the last decade. 9/10.
