Great subject matter spoiled by a ridiculous, fictional romantic plot. And who cares about a love affair in the middle of a war with the most evil man in the history of the world? Good grief.
Colin Firth's performance is as woody as the General Sherman in Sequoia National Park. And why do the English mumble so much when their thick accents make it impossible to understand anything that comes out of their mouths?
These characters are supposed to represent the most intelligent minds in Great Britain but they fail to utter one word of wit throughout the entire movie.
Save your shillings. Just because they're English doesn't mean they know how to write a script!

Powerful. I started to watch it and couldn't stop even though it was after 1 AM in the morning. The performance by Nina Hoss is perfection. I fell instantly in love with her. The movie was crafted for her.
This movie is a work of art. It is the finest expression of true love other than Romeo and Juliet. Her love for her husband is beyond belief. Her beauty transcends her physical appearance.
I keep watching this movie over and over. I cannot believe that I never knew of its existence until a week ago. I only wished Hollywood produced movies like this.
In a sense it is a Cinderella movie with a twist: like the mythological bird, the phoenix, a woman is regenerated from the ashes of the Holocaust. Her husband works at a cabaret, appropriately named the Phoenix. Nelly not only is reborn physically but psychologically as she comes to the realization of her husband's soul and love for her.
The following lines written by her friend to Nelly are haunting, foreshadowing our mutual fates: "I told you there is no way back for us. But for me there is no way forward either. I feel more drawn to our dead than to our living."
You must see this movie.

This is McQueen's greatest movie. "The Great Escape" is fictional; Papillon is not. The movie is based on the autobiography of Henri "Papillon" Charriere, who is sentence to life on the French penal colony, Devil's Island.
The most powerful scene is when Papillon dreams of confronting a jury, pleading that he did not kill the pimp for which he has been falsely accused of doing, resulting in his prison sentence. However, this jury does not charge him for killing the pimp; rather it charges Papillon for living a wasted life, to which he honestly pleads guilty.
This movie is sad, even depressing. But the scene culminating in Papillon pleading guilty to a wasted life alone makes this movie worth watching. How many of you can plead "not guilty" to the charge of living a wasted life? In all honesty, I cannot, and that's why this movie haunts me with its powerful personal charge. Undoubtedly it deserves a 10 rating.
