With the exception of Francesca Annis, Danny Griffin, Stephen Moyer and Jack Davenport, the casting is abysmal. Very wooden and very much a soap! The story is a complete hodgepodge...a bit here a bit there... it's just plainly bad. And to think they'll be a season 2?! How?!?! I'll stick to the 2002 version of the actual story, with Rupert Graves and Damian Lewis.
I have viewed the newer version of this story and have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed in it. There was nothing magical about it, even the dress was drab! Angela Lansbury is wonderful as Mrs Harris. An absolutely fabulous cast in general unlike the new adaptation. Lansbury was believable as the poor war widow who has to work incredibly hard for the meagre wage she is paid. Everything from her accent to her mannerisms are perfect. Lesley Manville struggles highly at this. The dresses she views at her employers home were superb, and the dress she then buys for herself is absolutely beautiful. The newer version by comparison is decidedly lacking. Don't bother with the cinematic release, stick to reliable Lansbury for a far more enjoyable experience.
The film itself is good with excellent effects, but in no way should it be taken as any kind of accurate portrayal of the true events. It's unbelievable that the film states at the get go that the Enfield Haunting was one of the Warrens most diabolical cases! They were hardly even involved. One person involved in the case, and barely portrayed in the film, if at all, is SPR member Guy Lyon Playfair, who has himself stated that The Warrens only spent around half a day with the family, and that Ed started talking about how much money could be made from this case. Playfair himself told them to leave in disgust. A good film, but cheeky to attribute it to The Warrens.
