  • Great Japanese classic animation!

I was born the same year this film came out. Being half Japanese and having read or been told many other Japanese folk stories, I am very familiar with some of the characters in this particular story (the Onis and Tengu for example).

There are several lessons to be learned from this film; from trusting those around you, to being selfish and the rewards of helping those in need. Although there is some nudity, the audience needs to look past that and focus on the morals being told.

The ending holds a lot of emotion and the theme song throughout has a nice rhythm! I would recommend watching this in Japanese with the subtitles on.

9/10 stars for me on this one. :)

  • Not your typical Rob Schneider comedy, but worth watching.

The version I watched was a bit on the low budget end. I heard that it ran out of funding back in 2008, so they must have scrapped it all together and released it this year (2010).

That all said, the movie itself is good. It's a dark comedy/drama dealing with a depressed individual (Rob Schneider), who is visited by a Colombian spiritual group who believe him to be the Chosen One who can set the world back into balance. Although it's a comedy, it is not of the normal standard that Rob Schneider usually plays (i.e.; Deuce Bigalow, The Hot Chick, etc.).

I think if this movie was properly edited and had a real soundtrack attached, I would rate this movie higher. I say it's worth 6.5/10.

  • Bland and just under mediocre.

I went into the theater with low expectations in hopes of it having a great effect on me; however, I still left feeling disappointed. Things were just too predictable, as well as unbelievable (and not in the conspiracy sense, but as in the situations the characters get themselves into).

Tom Hanks seemed almost miscast in his part, IMO, it's the worst acting he's done yet. Even the musical score wasn't up to par. There hardly seemed to be any chemistry between the actors; although, Ian McKellen played his part well.

I suppose I would still recommend this to any Catholic friends just for the simple fact that it has to with a scandal involving Jesus and the Holy Grail; although, I wouldn't even mention it being a thriller. It may serve as a good time killer while cooking dinner. Then once it's done, you could eat your dinner while watching your good movie.
