Saanjhbaatir Roopkathara is a simple story told beautifully through poetry and symbolism. It is a low-budget tastefully made Bengali film produced by noted economist & management guru Arindam Chaudhuri, and is directed by Anjan Das. Coming from economics and management background, it is commendable to see the producer having such great taste for meaningful cinema. Saanjhbaatir Roopkathara also known as the Silk and silhouettes made huge waves in the world of Bengali cinema when it released. It was a huge hit and one of my favourite film made under Arindam Chaudhuri's production house. The story of the movie is based on a novel by Joy Goswami. Starring Indrani Halder and Soumitra Chatterjee, the movie has been made superbly by Anjan Das.It is more of a poetry and very beautifully executed. Saanjhbathir Roopkathara tells the story of a young dreamer. Indrani Halder acted exceptionally well. She plays the role of a woman keen on writing poetry but had no idea on how to do it. Her father(Soumitra Chatterjee),who keenly supported her introduced her to Pablo Neruda's collection and so poetry started at a young age.It is a brilliantly made film. I am very fond of Bengali films and this one is one of my all time favorite with everything beautifully done,be it acting, screenplay or direction.
This movie makes me realize all the situations which we middle class families are facing happily without any complaints and especially all the school teachers who teaches all their students but don't have enough money to teach their own children,to keep them happy. In the movie,Rishi Kapoor essays the role of a low earning maths teacher which he played to perfection, hardworking and still hated by his students. It is a movie without the usual glam sham which you expect from a Hindi movie but considering the story and the excellent acting of Rishi Kapoor, I don't think there was a need for any. All the emotions shown in this movie of a middle class family in happy and funny way.
As the movie came from Planman production and directed by Rituparno Ghosh,we all know the movie would be mind blowing but what adds four moons to the movie is lear actor Amitabh Bachchan. He was superb in his role,Harish(Harry),a theater artist and a big fan of Shakespeare. The way Rituparno presents the art of Shakespeare in this movie The Last Lear is just Mind Blowing.
I have seen Rituparno's Dosar and find that movie amazing, despite of be in Black and White,he always takes risk as taken in this movie, the movie is an art film which most of the people don't like to see but this movie, everyone should watch.
