  • An outstanding visual space film

Gravity is an outstanding visual film directed by Alfonso Cuaron, crammed with some lovely area views, and excellent 3D effects that were used in an appropriate manner to create an extraordinary CGI appearance. I enjoyed the movie but didn't find it to be one of the very best of the year. The problem with this movie is the story, technically it's a flawless masterpiece and the 3D is amazing with a strong performance by Sandra Bullock, but the story is thin and predictable. Bullock does give one of the better performances of the year and the 'man vs. nature' storyline is always a compelling one but this movie mainly works as an amazingly beautiful visual feast and little more. Overall, Gravity is technically sound and very likable, but looking back you might wonder what the movie was about. If you accept Gravity as pure popcorn-munching fun and nothing else, you won't go away disappointed

  • a slow starter but still an entertaining film for disaster fans

Aftershock is written and directed by Nicolás López (Eli Roth takes a co-writing credit) who uses true stories of the real 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile in 2010 as the basis for his survival film, and filmed it in a lot of the same locations where the actual earthquake hit. Aftershock is a disaster movie highlighting how human nature can be more terrifying than Mother Nature. The story follows with three friends on holiday in Chile: Pollo (Nicolás Martínez), Gringo (Eli Roth) and Ariel (Ariel Levy),while checking out the local nightlife they get caught in the society-dissembling effects of an earthquake, but to make matters worse the local prison has been demolished too, and the convicts are roaming the streets. Their Chilean misadventures are now truly horrifying. Pollo, Gringo and Ariel must now evade looters, rioters and a whole assortment of terrors, with three young women they have just met, while a group of convicts hunt them across the city. The chaos on screen is well done and is the film's strongest element. The effects, kills and gore were excellent, but were just too random and sporadic to be taken seriously. More conflict was needed in the first act to grab one viewer's attention and it probably would have been much better if you just skipped the first 20min and get right into the earthquake and what follows. Although the story and characters become a bit predictable, with a couple of plot holes here and there, it still is an entertaining film to watch and more so if you enjoy Roth's work.

  • An outstanding nostalgic horror film

The Conjuring is an outstanding nostalgic horror film, a vast improvement over the disappointing horror films of the past couple of years. It abandons the cheap jump scares in favor of slowly building up the tension to the final event and creating that great creepy, unsettling feeling of an old style horror film. James wan does an excellent job as director and the film holds together very well with great performances by all the cast especially Vera Farmiga (Lorraine Warren) and Lili Taylor (Carolyn Perron). The script is wonderfully paced, prepping us for the ghostly realm by opening with a more fun, but still creepy story about the Annabelle doll and the haunted past of Ed and Lorraine Warren adds depth and complexity to their involvement. There is a small lull about 2/3 in but the film gets quickly back on track. Overall its quite entertaining film
