  • Anti-Religious Zeitgeist on Steroids

After watching at least 8 episodes, it is time to look for another British crime drama. The bias against Christians is full throttle, continuing the view that anyone who takes the Bible seriously is bigoted, ill-educated, socially backward, and hateful. Members of the clergy are portrayed as excessively morally compromised social workers than those who love God and therefore, people. Such a shame with fine actors and actresses in the cast.

  • Writers are Captured by the Prevailing Dystopian Zeitgeist

Seriously? Weaving the dystopian caricature of Handmaiden's Tale into the show? Orthodox Roman Catholic Chesterton would be rolling in his grave if he viewed this, seeing his beloved characters so disrespected and used for socio-political purposes. While most people would agree that there have long been people with regressive views and those who deprive people of the care they should receive, this was ridiculous. I've hung on to viewing because I love seeing Claudie Blakley. She is such a great actress in all roles-dramatic and comedic I don't need or want to see the so-called progressive mindset applied to an otherwise enjoyable show.

  • Lessons in Sterotyped Victimhood

There are dramatic portrayals of depressing, difficult, and challenging times of life which provide insight about other people and our own circumstances. However, there are the depressing portrayals of life and emotion in dramas that serve as vehicles to regurgitate victimhood through sterotyped characters, dialogue, and plot lines. I watched (endured) this with my spouse, but it was a struggle. Lewis Pullman, as Calvin, defied the stereotyped bad guy through his nuanced performance of a caring partner who didn't blather sociopolitical talking points. Most of the other men and women were portrayed as mindless, robotic products of their era, unable to think deeply. It's difficult to have sympathies with a character who barely blinks and is robotically angry ad nauseum. Yes, there were limited career choices for women of the 50s, but not everyone with a position of power was brainless and misanthropic, trying to defeat them. Also, how did the lead character drive a nice car, live in a modern, clean home, and keep herself and her child so well dressed with so little income? This was a waste of my time.
