I've watched every single episode of Six Feet Under in about two months, between work and college etc, and I hadn't realised how much it had effected me until this finale. Simply put, this is the best television episode I've ever watched, and easily contains the best six minutes of any television episode ever. Until the final few minutes I had no idea I cared about these characters, or the lives they lead, or even the choices they make, but suddenly it all hit me. Everything, life, comes to an end and ultimately that's what Alan Ball goes for, it's just the choices you make that define it. Watching everything the show has built come to an end was truly emotional, because everything I've watched over the past few months became very real to me - this family I've somehow grown to be a part of, if only recently.
I'm not ashamed to say I cried during the ending, and for a man who hasn't cried in years that's saying something. I was moved by this episode in a way I've never been moved before, and I'm unsure if I will be again. 'Everyone's Waiting' is a testament to the overwhelming talent of the shows writers, cast, producers and crew because now I realise how expertly developed and crafted the series was, and how everything falls into place in the best way. It's almost life affirming in a sense, those final few minutes, and I'm still unsure how to feel about it, four days later.
I expect this episode will stay with me forever. I hope it does at least, because it's very rare to find TV that makes you appreciate being alive, if only to remind you that you are.
