about
“Utah” is perhaps the most pop track on the album, bringing a fullness to the album and to the performance element for Madison. The song’s lyrical content is about the winks life can give us, like a recurring issue that seems specific to a place or time, so we find ways to get out of Utah and search for ways to work through problems. “Utah” is supported by Madison’s former college band mates, featuring Finnegan Singer on guitar, Taylor Robinson on drums, and Charley Ruddell on bass, with Madison as the producer. Supporting vocals are also from J. Hoard and Melissa McMillan.
lyrics
Utah
Written by Madison McFerrin
[verse 1]
Somethin’ ‘bout the desert
It must get you heated
Seems we can’t escape delirium
Caught between the canyons
You make your body echo
Everything we hear’s been said and done
Thought that it was over
Thought that we could make it
Across the Colorado line
But I was mistaken
And I’m over waitin’
For you to make up your damn mind
[chorus]
Gotta get out of Utah
Gotta get back home
But is Brooklyn any better
Or should we be alone
[verse 2]
Somethin’ bout formations
Splitting into pieces
Cracking the windshield as we drive
It must irritate you
To the point you break to
Wonderin’ if we could still survive
Maybe this is crazy
Maybe I’m just lazy
Whatever the case let’s just decide
‘Cause I’m sick and tired of waitin’
Don’t think I can take it
For now let’s make it through the night
[chorus]
Gotta get out of Utah
Gotta get back home
But is Brooklyn any better
Or should we be alone
Should we be alone
[bridge]
I hate it when we fight
Can’t stand more sleepless nights
What else is there to say to make you stay
Or should we walk away
[chorus]
Gotta get the fuck up outta Utah
Gotta get back home
But is Brooklyn any better
Said is Brooklyn any better
Should we take this down to Georgia
Will California help us grow
‘Cause if Brooklyn isn’t better
I wanna be alone
Gotta get the fuck up outta Utah
Oh, gotta get out of Utah
Don’t wanna be alone

"If you don’t know who Madison McFerrin is by now, you ought to be ashamed of yourself because since she burst out to the mainstream in 2019, she’s been that one person who you can’t wait to hear music from."-AFROPUNK...more
