about

This recording comprises instrumental versions of songs from the 12th to the 14th centuries played on several instruments but featuring most strongly the hurdy gurdy. Some of these consist of monophonic lines of music whilst others have two or more parts. We have added some intros or sections, either improvised or designed.

“Vexilla Regis proudent inferni” is a phrase used by Dante Alighieri in Canto XXXIV of the Inferno. It means “Forth go the banners of the King of Hell” and is an allusion to the Latin Easter hymn “Vexilla Regis.” The phrase is used by Virgil to introduce Lucifer in the poem.
