Cor blimey, I taste like Tea.
I am a subtle flavour, quiet and polite, gentle, almost ambient. My presence in crowds will often go unnoticed. Best not to spill me on your clothes though, I can leave a nasty stain.
What Flavour Are You?My name is melankorin, but most people just call me Kori. I'm a woman of the year 2002, an eternally sleep-deprived graphic designer and the autistic loser in command of this virtual dumpster you found yourself gazing upon.
If you'd like to reach me, do it at melankorin (at) pm (dot) me.

Why did you make this website?
I think personal websites are an awesome form of virtual self-expression and a neat way of putting my design and code skills to use, and... yeah, that's it. I don't think I need a pointless long-winded statement on how I'm defeating evil cyber megacorporations with the power of shoddily written HTML and CSS here.
How did you learn how to code?
I picked up the essentials of web dev with freeCodeCamp, and from there I branched out, experimenting by myself. At some point I grew frustrated at how tedious maintaining a website is, so I learned Jekyll with this fantastic video tutorial series. Learning web dev takes time, it takes dedication and it takes a willingness to keep on experimenting endlessly.
What did you use to build this website? / How did you do [thing]?
How often do you update this website?
When I feel like it. (and when my perfectionism allows me to)
Who's the character on your banner?
Why is this website not accessible on mobile devices?
What were your inspirations when designing this website?
Yes! Awesome question.
My aim for this version of melankorin.net was a early to mid 2000s cool angular techy Vectorheart-ish look, like what you'd see in designers' websites from that time period, with some of my personal touch. I spent a horrendous amount of time browsing through and collecting old websites, reverse-engineering them, studying and dissecting the shit out of them, all in hopes of getting closer to replicating that style... I don't think I'll be able to truly replicate that style, and that's fine, I learned I'd rather use bits of the past to build something new instead.
If I have to name any specific designs and designers that helped me make sense of that vision the most... new-model, delicious-daim, the Caterpillar website circa 2000, the Australian INfront website circa 2003 and the Kaliber0000 website circa 2003.
What does your name mean?
melankorin is a combination of the word "melancholy" and Korin, my silly little worldbuilding project. Most people just call me Kori though.
And no, I did not name this fictional surveillance state of mine after myself, it's the other way around. lol
What are your pronouns?
I'm a woman so... she, I guess. But preferably Your Majesty, thanks.
Where are you from? What languages do you speak?
What's this star thing you use everywhere?
It's (nerd emote) not a star, it's a seven-pointed asterisk! It's a personal "brand" of sorts, and it has seven points because the number seven has special significance to me.
Why haven't you replied to my e-mail / comment / message?
I'm a busy woman, a bit of a scatterbrained recluse, and I have a lot of trouble keeping track of things. Sorry!
Can we talk / Can we be friends?
If you are above the age of 18, feel free to send me an e-mail. No promises, though. (see above)
Can we do an art trade?
Of course! Reach out to me if you'd like to (if you don't know where to do that, try my e-mail). Although please be aware that it might take a while (again, see above).
What's your favourite R.E.M. album?
Murmur my beloved <3 Actually, the answer to that isn't as clear as I thought. I love Murmur, but I love New Adventures in Hi-Fi to death, too. And I love Document, it's the album that made me fall in love with them in the first place. I can't choose. Oh well.
Are you [label]?
I am Kori!
Your dominant hues are cyan and green. Although you definately strive to be logical you care about people and know there's a time and place for thinking emotionally. Your head rules most things but your heart rules others, and getting them to meet in the middle takes a lot of your energy some days.
Your saturation level is higher than average - You know what you want, but sometimes know not to tell everyone. You value accomplishments and know you can get the job done, so don't be afraid to run out and make things happen.
Your outlook on life can be bright or dark, depending on the situation. You are flexible and see things objectively.

What Flavour Are You?You are Windows 98. You are the second oldest of the windows girls. You're neither beloved nor despised, but many people still use you. You also have a box you keep with you at all times, for reasons known only to you.
Which OStan are you?Colophon is stinky nerd speak for "what I made this with!"
Very interesting questionnaire. You can find the blank one here.
Please introduce yourself.
melankorin, or just Kori as most people call me. Eternally sleep-deprived graphic designer in command of this virtual dumpster. I like mint chip ice cream.
How long have you been making websites?
Websites in general? A really long time it seems. I remember messing around with Weebly and other website makers when I was 11, more than a decade ago (where has the time gone...). Coding static websites by myself? This website you're looking at had its formal start in 2022.
And what got you into the hobby?
When I was a kid? I just wanted to make silly little Littlest Pet Shop websites like my favourite YouTubers (other 11-year-old girls who played with LPS) did.
As an adult? The year was 2020, it was the height of the pandemic, I was stuck at home doing jack shit and I discovered some (now defunct) MySpace rip-off website. Never had much of an interest in actually interacting in there, I just wanted to make my layout cool. After that I discovered the old/indie/small web (whatever you call it) and the rest is history.
What kind of website are you most interested in?
Personal websites. Unique people with interesting art, interesting perspectives (even if I disagree with them), interesting layouts. Bonus points if their sense of aesthetics is similar to mine!
What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
I either obsess over every little detail and meticulously plan for months before doing anything or just go and bullshit my way to a decent design. No in-between.
Please link to your biggest inspirations.
Well, you asked for it.
Swiss Style design, art and design associated with the Vectorheart and the Gen X Soft Club movements, new-model, Zenmai Studio, The Designers Republic, Julian House, David Carson, the most random ass websites you can think of, R.E.M., Matthew Laskowski, the cynical smartasses I watched on YouTube when I was 14, Ilya Kuvshinov, and a trillion other people who helped shape who I am.
What's your favourite part about making websites?
Honestly? The technical aspects. I love building and optimising systems and I love coming up with new solutions for problems I come across! Might be an unexpected answer, but I've always been the type to tinker, and web development is my perfect playground.
And the thing you struggle with the most?
CSS maintanability. Accessibility. Coming up with class names. Spending way too much time optimizing the shit out of everything instead of actually making new things. My huge to-do list. Too much ambition and not enough skill or time to pull it off. The constant urge to start all over for the hundredth time.
Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
I reuse and daisy-chain layouts with Eleventy's help. All my pages use a default layout, which is a basic HTML boilerplate. Built on top of that is the wrapper layout, which is what I use for the homepage and some other pages. Lots of other pages (blog, gallery, etc.) are standalone layouts built on top of the default one though, because I often need space beyond the constraints of the wrapper.
How confident are you with CSS?
I can make it bend to my will.
Do you know how to correctly use dl?
Yes I do. (looked it up on w3sschools just now)
What is your favourite HTML element?
<div>, it can be anything I want it to be.
If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
I open my code editor and I write it. I know, I'm such an iconoclast.
Do you know JavaScript?
Enough to do what I want to do for now.
How about PHP?
I tried installing one of those fanlisting management scripts once. I got a horrible headache immediately, gave up, and spent a lot of time building my own Eleventy-powered fanlisting management system instead. I should probably make that open source one day.
Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
The theme is... whatever I find cool.
Are you more focused on content or design?
I tend to hyperfocus on the design because something something my job, but obviously I know there has to be substance to that style.
Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
Yeah, the one you can currently read on your address bar. Might get another in the future.
What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
I could write a whole essay on our generation's obsession with the past (or a distorted version of it).
TLDR: Nostalgia can be interesting if you do it well, if you have actual knowledge about the past and if you have something to say about it. (And no, you don't necessarily need to have lived through that past to be respectful to it.) But if you're just another person who doesn't know anything or have anything to say and is just copying trends... I would say these people aren't even about the real "past" anymore, they're there for a fictional version of it they created in their heads.
Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
I sure hope it is.
What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
They're great.
What do you think of button walls in particular?
Also great, but I have learned to be more intentional with who I link instead of linking anyone I come across.
If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
I have started over, multiple times actually. I keep the content the same, I just optimise the code and change the layout.
Are you envious of other people's websites?
When I was just starting out, definitely. "Wow I hope I can make a website this awesome one day..." Nowadays not really, I think I can do the things I wanted to do.
What text editor do you use?
I started out with Atom. When it bit the dust I spent some time looking, but ultimately I (unintentionally) did exactly what they wanted me to do and switched to VS Code, the reason why Atom died.
Why do you use that one?
I have my reasons! It's hyper-customisable, it has all the extensions I need, it has GitHub integration and a Git GUI baked-in, it backs up my settings, it has a terminal (Atom didn't have one, crazy) which is pretty important for using SSGs, it's perfect for what I do.
Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
In my own server. I have no idea why anyone would do otherwise.
This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
It's whatever. I use Leprd.
How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
I don't have to estimate, I just need to look at the /site folder Eleventy outputs. It currently sits at exactly 50 MB. I did a pretty good job optimising everything!
Do you keep local backups of your files?
I have cloned the Git repo to my computer, yes. And I keep copies of some very old versions of my website, too.
Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
Both have their time and place, but I can safely I gravitate towards the latter. I'm a designer, okay? Highly visual is my literal job.
Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
Yeah, I have no idea. Could you take a look around and answer that one for me?
Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
No, I haven't.
Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
In my friend circles I'm the only webmaster, yeah. I really do want to make webmaster friends, I just need to be more proactive in contacting other people (something I really struggle with).
Do people in your real life know about your website?
My friends do.
Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
I have gone on extended breaks in the past, but I'm trying to update more often nowadays. Once a month... maybe twice a month if I feel particularly daring.
I wish I could update more often, but I don't have the time I used to have. And besides... do we really need to update our websites every day as if it were a Twitter feed? I like the slower life.
And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I change it from time to time (read: years), when I outgrow my current design.
Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
It's all about me! And "me" includes my hobbies, yes.
Do you do web design professionally?
I can't believe it, but yes, I have learned enough about web development to do it for a living. Crazy. I could've never imagined my silly interest for MySpace layouts would have led me to a job in the future.
If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
I... develop websites.
Do you communicate with people by email very much?
I do get e-mails (if you reader have sent me one: thank you!! and i'm sorry), I just struggle with replying to them. God I need to get a grip...
Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
I mean... I'd love to keep nothing but my website, but for someone with my goals, unfortunately that is just not possible. I need to be pragmatic about this.
How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I started using Discord way back in 2017 and it seems that I'm not leaving that hellhole any time soon. I use a few others, but Discord is how I communicate with my (internet) friends.
Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
I listen to music all the time, not just while working. You'll be hard-pressed to find me without my headphones. I listen to a lot of stuff, but I mostly gravitate between alternative and indie rock, breaks-ish electronic music and weeb crap like Vocaloid and Shibuya-kei. My favourite band is R.E.M., if you haven't been able to tell already.
Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
Yeah, almost everything except for my fanlistings, which are located in a subdomain.
On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
Anything that interests me.
Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
What is your "real self"? I don't think anyone in this space is presenting their "real self". The whole point of making websites for most of us is curating the pieces of our "real self" we want out there. And again, just because our physical existence is... physical, does that make it more "real"?
Wow, I sure went off-base.
Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
Not yet, but I'd like to! I just need to get out of my shell more...
Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
MASONRY LAYOUTS WITH CSS ONLY WHEN??????? HOLY SHIT WHY IS THIS NOT A THING YET
What are practices that you think people should avoid?
Inline CSS. The HTML <marquee> element, it has been deprecated. Hosting your images in a different place. Not backing up your website and only editing from the browser. Not optimising images or even your website in general (seriously, there are some out there that freeze my browser).
What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
SVGs, for sure. My current layout was only made possible by using hand-coded SVGs! Static site generators (they're really not that hard to use)! CSS preprocessors (like Sass) and frameworks (like Tailwind)! Keeping your code in a Git repo!
I suppose a lot of people in the indie web avoid these things because they're intimidated by it and because they seem too... mainstream dev-ish, in a way. Or maybe because they want to be authentically "retro". I definitely understand the first two (I too was intimidated by it, and I too thought those were professional tools unfit for personal, artistic websites), not so much the third (I don't think anyone cares whether your code looks like something straight out of 2005, just use modern tools to your advantage).
There's more! SVG gradient map filters, the HTML details element, image maps, JavaScript in general...
Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
It's an unholy mix of both, unfortunately.
Do you consider different browsers?
No, see below.
Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
Vivaldi! I don't really like that it's Chromium-based, but it has too many features that I just can't live without, like web panels, tab stacks, a fully customisable UI, tab tiling, tab hibernation, workspaces, sessions, a built-in RSS feed... Safe to say no other browser matches it.
And what OS are you on?
Unfortunately Windows 11 because I like being able to run games and because I am chained to Adobe for my job.
I have tried Linux before, I liked having full control over everything but I hated how finicky it was. (and, y'know, how it didn't run the programs I need) Macs aren't even an option, I'm not rich and just 5 minutes of trying to use them makes me want to kill someone.
Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
I think I made my opinion on it pretty clear with the word "unfortunately".
Are your websites mobile-friendly?
No. Not yet? We'll see. I'm interested (very much so), but it's gonna take an ungodly amount of time and I'm afraid going mobile-friendly is just gonna ruin my vision.
What are your thoughts on autoplay?
Annoying.
What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I'm in a few. They're great! They're best when they're for very specific things rather than just general categories for people, and when they're not too big to easily navigate.
Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
I run a fanlisting collective. Do these count as shrines? Ah, probably not... For these I focus a lot on the layout and there's not much to them beyond that. To be honest, I'm not proud of that. I like shrines with a bit more substance to them, y'know? Maybe the person going on and on about how they like that thing and what impact it had on them. Anything beyond just a pretty layout like my lazy ass, lol.
Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
What even is being cliche? I'd say "I hope I'm not!" but that's a cope, human creativity isn't born out of nothing, we are inspired by others.
That being said I can definitely think of things I'd call "cliche" (as in, corny) in indie web dev, like writing pointless navel-gazing "manifestos". I try to avoid it.
What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
Something that looks cool as hell! Something that doesn't just look cool, something that is cool and that you'll remember when you leave. I do strive for that.
Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
I don't know, am I? I used to use other people's art and a few assets from Piece 2003, but as of v5 everything is now fully made by me! (except when it isn't, like for some icons)
What are your favourite resource sites?
The aforementioned Piece 2003. A lot of resource websites tend to focus on cutesy feminine stuff (nothing against it, it's just not my style) so Piece's genderlessness was my lifesaver for a long time. Honourable mention to frank-web.net.
Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
Scope creep, scope creep, scope creep! Using px for sizing and very messy CSS in general...
What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Keep your files and your code clean and nice. Keep a backup. Use Google, your questions have already been answered somewhere. Do not be afraid of learning new things, like modern web development techniques or hell, JavaScript. Do not be afraid of the scary code! Code is not scary!
Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
If I answered this question just a few months ago: hard-coding CSS is the worst thing you could possibly do. Don't do it. I only do it when I really have to (rarely, to fix other people's code).
Answering it now: hard-coding CSS in the HTML style attribute is still the worst, and using a style tag isn't much better. But... Tailwind really opened my eyes. I initially dismissed it as a system for normie corpo web devs to bake the same boring websites as always (cough cough like Bootstrap), but once I started using it at work, I realised it's not a pre-defined system, it's a quality of life upgrade for CSS. Shit, guess I've been converted.
What do you think of frameset layouts?
They're cute! Authentically retro and great for beginners, just not that good for me anymore. I love the boxed-in feeling of frames, but I can do it without iframes proper.
How about table-based layouts?
Also cute and very retro but just thinking about it gives me a headache. I don't like HTML tables and I'm glad I don't have to deal with them to do layouts. Blech.
Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
All three of these sure do exist. I find one-column to be too empty and three-column to be too much, but two-column is chef's kiss.
Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
I don't see why I'd spend very long on the HTML... except if I'm dealing with Liquid template code in the HTML, then yes, I can say... I still spend way more time on the CSS. lol
Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
You mean... writing? Yes, I write a lot. I have a physical planner and multiple physical journals.
Or if you mean something strictly digital... why would you do that? The complexities of HTML do nothing but distract you from your writing, and you need a whole ass browser to read your notes. I have an Obsidian vault and I write in Markdown, a much more manageable format.
Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
The latter.
Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
Somewhere in the middle but leaning towards advanced.
Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
All the time. Reverse-engineering is one of the best ways to learn.
Some people's code is so unique I think I could identify them just from their code. Have you ever thought of the way you write code being something that can identify you?
How did YOU learn how to make websites?
I'm just gonna steal this from my QnA section.
"I picked up the essentials of web dev with freeCodeCamp, and from there I branched out, experimenting by myself. At some point I grew frustrated at how tedious maintaining a website is, so I learned Jekyll with this fantastic video tutorial series."
Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
melankorin.net itself is a testament to my ability to get CSS to do crazy shit, so I guess I do.
Thoughts on floating elements?
I don't understand them. And to think there are people out there building whole layouts with float. Mad power.
When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
Unfortunately px. Bad practice bla bla bla I need everything to be pixel perfect, leave me alone.
Do you have a favourite font?
Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
Maybe. Depends on who it is... I'd definitely be the one responsible for the code though, I hate dealing with others' messy leftovers.
Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
I used to do it all the time when I was still in college. I need to get back to that habit.
Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
Yes! I bookmark websites! I'd be happy if you bookmarked mine!
What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
I don't really think about what others think, I design for myself, I want to make myself impressed. And I'm often impressed when I get my website to look as cool as I envisioned it in my head, or when I write something I think is meaningful.
Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
Obviously, I've been a techie since birth. I was a little girl who played with Japanese phones and spent her time tinkering around in Windows XP, a tween who cared more about Android system updates than her classmates, an adult who doesn't really have the time to do all these things anymore but still loves tech despite the grim state of technology right now. (or well... love might be a strong word nowadays, but someone who is interested)
And yes, I do collect. I still have those Japanese dumbphones from my childhood, and the collection has only grown! I should definitely write about that one day.
How often and for how long are you online?
Let's not even think about this one.
When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
My target audience is myself. My website is not a product.
Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
Looked into it once, not for me.
Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
Sort of, I'm currently looking into game development.
Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I am the SSG person. I learned the basics of Jekyll in 2022 and from there I never looked back. melankorin.net v4 was built with it, and it happily served me for years.
Unfortunately, as time passed and my web dev abilities progressed, I realised the limitations of Jekyll. Ruby gem management sucks when you know nothing about Ruby, having to rely on a Ruby environment in the first place is just kinda ass, it's a bit too opinionated and finicky at times (this is what drove me away from Hugo, which is even worse in that aspect) and most importantly, it's slow as fuck! I could brew some coffee in the time it took to build my website. Jekyll is perfect for beginners, but I was no longer one.
I had been fascinated by Eleventy for some time, but it scared me. Having to write JavaScript (I was intimidated by it back then) just for the settings? I wanted to learn it, but I couldn't bring myself to fight the dragon. But I braved through it, and I've been loving it ever since. It's minimal yet crazy powerful, and fast to boot!
Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
The earliest versions of my website had that hitcounter map thing, but I got rid of it eons ago. I don't think I need to concern myself with numbers.
Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
I lurk in a few, but I don't participate in any. Maybe I should, I just gotta increase my battery capacity.
Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
Straight into the editor. If it's a blog post I write in a Markdown file, if it's text-based and very repetitive (like this questionnaire!) I use Markdown in a YAML list.
Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
I don't really think about appearing cool to others, I think about looking cool to myself (even if my definition of "cool" is very out there). I've been called cool a few times so I guess my internal definition often overlaps with the external perception of cool?
Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
I used to feel that way. I deleted gigabytes worth of videos I recorded when I was little. I regret it every day... Nowadays I'm the polar opposite, I hoard shit like there's no tomorrow.
Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
I'd have to close it down, I wouldn't want to keep paying for a domain I don't use. The Wayback Machine exists though, so the answer is both.
Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I reveal what I have to.
Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
He doesn't have a website and he doesn't want to reveal himself to the world, but he's definitely reading this, so hi! You suck! (jk love you)
And do you optimise the images on your website?
Obviously. Nothing pisses me off more than websites with images so needlessly huge I can see them loading in real time on my decently fast connection. What an absolute throwback to 2002 that shit is.
We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
I'm dead.
This is burypink's fun and not serious at all questionnaire, answered by me. Enjoy.
