Milan Metro Information

As well as being a great means of public transport, the Milan Metro is an architectural marvel. When it opened in 1964, its architects won the most prestigious architectural award in Italy. With only 4 lines, the metro covers an impressive 101 km and serves a total of 113 stations. The Azienda Trasporti Milanesi is responsible for the operation of this vast network, which carries 1.5 million passengers a day.

Milan Metro Parking

The Milan Metro offers its passengers park and ride facilities. Parking is provided by the management in metered on-street car parks. However, a small parking fee must be paid to use this facility.

Milan Metro Rules and Tips

In the interests of safety, current passengers should be allowed to leave the train before new passengers board. It is advisable to hold on to the handrails at all times, both when boarding and when travelling on the train, to keep your balance. Try not to litter or leave items on board, especially newspapers. Those with pushchairs should use the lifts as they are more accessible. People with children should also take extra care when travelling on the metro.

Milan Metro Services

All stations and trains in the metro network have full HSDPA and UMTS connectivity. Stations are equipped with LED screens showing information about arriving trains. Some trains have automated announcements in English and Italian about the next station. The metro also provides car parking facilities at various stations. The car parks have designated bays for disabled people and in some cases there are special bays for women drivers. These are called ‘pink’ bays. Parking fees can be paid at ticket machines or to an attendant. Weekly and annual passes are also available.

Bicycles can be taken on the metro free of charge. However, bicycles are allowed after 20:00 on weekdays until the end of the service. On Saturdays and public holidays they are allowed all day. In August, bicycles can be transported at any time on any day of the week. Bicycles can only be transported in carriages marked with a bicycle symbol.
