Obituary of Robin Dana Beddis (nee Urquhart)
February 23, 1950 - Kitchener, Ontario
June 29, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta
Robin Dana Beddis (nee Urquhart), died peacefully on Wednesday, June 29, surrounded by her family, after a courageous 3-year battle with Cancer.
Beloved soulmate and devoted wife to Ian; much-loved mother to her sons and their families, David (Lisa) Harlow and India, Kevin (Carrie) Isobel, and Jamie (Paisley) Charlotte. Also a mother to Ian’s son Matthew (Cindy) Jake, Reid and Miles, daughter of Jean (nee Macpherson) Urquhart (2005) and J. Daniel Urquhart (1992); and loving big sister to Anne (2017), Jim, George and Margaret.
Known as Nene, she adored and cherished her grandchildren beyond measure. She took such pride in that role as well as that of being a mother. Her favorite times were being with family and sharing in those special moments that transcended generations, including the many family trips that surrounded her with her loved ones.
Growing up Robin lived in many different cities across Canada and with each new city, brought new adventures, experiences and, of course, schools. Of the many schools Robin attended, Havergal College and Crofton House brought the fondest memories, where she formed lifelong friendships and connections that she always cherished.
Robin was beautiful inside and out. She was loved by all that knew her. She truly cherished her many friendships; each one was unique and very special to her. Robin always had a selfless devotion and was a confidant to those she cared for. Among her many passions was the game of Bridge, she could have played it 24/7. Becoming a ‘Life Master’ was one of her many cherished accomplishments. Golf and tennis were also chosen pastimes – all with the common theme that great friends make for great games.
Robin’s career was as a volunteer, holding executive positions in the charitable sector. Throughout her career, she demonstrated a passion and dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of children and youth in Calgary and across Canada. The charities and not-for-profits included CHAS, The Junior League and most prominently, Kids Help Phone. At the latter, she provided her focus and expertise for fifteen years, becoming the first women chairperson at both the Alberta and National Board levels. This all came at a critical stage in the history of Kids Help Phone, which saw the introduction of ‘The Bell walk For Kids’, a fundraiser that put the charity on solid financial footing. As a testament to the support she had from family and friends for four of the first five years running the walk, the Beddis Team was the top fundraiser. Her volunteer work was not limited to the above, with time spent on the board of governors at Strathcona Tweedsmuir School and as Vice Chair, Corporate Relations at the Saddledome during the ’88 Winter Olympics among others. She was generous with her time and had a keen focus on giving back to the community.
Over the last three years, she faced her battle with determination, grace and courage while always keeping a positive outlook and her sense of humor. Her team at Tom Baker cared and was always there for her with honesty and compassion. Can’t put into words how wonderful they all were.
In her own parting words ‘Good Night Darlings, I love you to the Moon and back’.
