From their first discovery, numerous fantastic interpretations of the carvings have been advanced. Professor Sven Nilsson of Lund believed that they had been executed by the Phoenicians and depicted the worship of the great god Ba’al. Though subsequently ridiculed, it can hardly be denied that the origin of the ideas behind the carvings may well be sought as far away as Mycenae and Crete.
