This recipe for wonton soup uses a quick frozen wontons hack. Made in just 30 minutes, it’s teeming with juicy dumplings, bok choy, shiitakes & green onions.
If you love ordering a huge bowl of wonton soup when you hit your favorite Chinese restaurant, this recipe is for you. Using a frozen, store bought wontons trick, it comes together in just 30 minutes and is made all in one pot. Effortless and so tasty!
What is Wonton Soup?
Wonton Soup is probably already one of your go-to dishes when you order Chinese take out. If it’s not, get ready to fall in love. This soup is typically made with a light chicken-based broth and chock full of juicy dumplings and tender bok choy. For this recipe, we add some mushrooms because for more depth of flavor.
Frozen Wontons: I love using Trader Joe’s Chicken Cilantro Mini Wontons. If you don’t have one in your area, pick any dumpling from the grocery store or specialty Asian market.
The Components of this Wonton Soup Recipe
Every wonton soup is a little different, but each will likely have the following central, ingredients:
- Greens – Green onion and bok choy are crucial musts that elevate any wonton soup worth eating. You could also add in spinach, cilantro, broccoli or any other greens you like.
- Garlic – Fresh garlic adds a welcome taste and fragrance to your wonton soup.
- Mushrooms – While not every wonton soup calls for mushrooms, I believe they add a wonderful depth and earthiness. Shiitakes are my go-to, but feel free to use any fungi you like.
- Broth – Chicken is preferred, but feel free to use veggie or even beef broth.
- Wontons – You can use store bought wontons if you’re in a pinch for time. If you’re feeling ambitions make our gyoza recipe or pelmeni from scratch and substitute them for wontons.
- Seasoning – Highly recommend adding a bit of low-sodium soy sauce and pure sesame oil to the broth. It adds so much flavor!

3 Tips for the Tastiest Wonton Soup
A couple of handy tips will help you make the best, steaming bowl of wonton soup.
- Use low-sodium broth. Since you’ll add in soy sauce at the very end, you’ll want to use low-sodium chicken broth to ensure the soup doesn’t come out too salty.
- Wash the bok choy well. Bok choy is prone to having dirt stuck in between the leaves. Wash it thoroughly under cold water to make sure there’s no grime.
- Don’t overcook the wontons. Avoid overcooking the wontons, as they will turn super mushy. Once they float to the top, they’re ready to go!
Storing Leftovers
The awesome part about wonton soup is that the flavor just gets better and better as the broth marinates in itself. Store your soup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days. To reheat, place your soup in saucepan over medium-heat and stir every now and again until warmed through.

Second time making it! Love it and it's not time consuming. Thanks
That’s amazing to hear! I’m so glad you love it and that it’s easy to make. Thanks for coming back for a second round—makes my day! 😊
I followed the recipe exactly, except that I used the whole bag of Traders Joe's cilantro and chicken wontons in stead of just 20. It was really delicious, but I thought it needed either regular soy, more broth rather than water, or a little salt to make it more flavorful. I definitely will be making this again!
I'm glad you enjoyed the soup! Let me know how you tweak it next time to your liking!
Second time making it. The first time I used the ingredients listed, second time I used Spinach instead of Bok Choy they didn’t have it at the store and I forgot the mushrooms! Used homemade chicken stock second time around. Either way very tasty and easy recipe!
It sounds like you've made the most of what you have on hand! Substituting spinach for bok choy is such a smart move, and homemade chicken stock takes the flavor to the next level. Even without the mushrooms, it's great to hear it still turned out tasty. Thanks for sharing your tweaks—they're so helpful for others who might not have all the ingredients on hand!
Would baby Bella mushrooms be ok ?
Yes, you can use whatever you prefer or have on hand. Enjoy!
Great recipe. I add a couple slices of BBQ pork (store bought) and let simmer, really adds to the flavor. Must have baby bok choy and snow peas.
Thanks for sharing your tweaks Cheryl! Sounds delicious.
This is my third time making this soup. Absolutely love this recipe! I make sure when I go to Trader Joe's that I pick up 2 packages of the Wonton's. This time I'm adding chopped spinach & thinly sliced carrots to my home made chicken broth. Had an abundance of spinach on hand. Husband loves this too. Thank you for all your wonderful recipes!
I'm so happy you love this soup! Adding extra veggies is always a good (and tasty) idea! Enjoy!
Excellent!!!!
Thanks Matt, so happy you love it!
This is absolutely fantastic! I also added some crisp tender sliced carrots. This is now on "the regular rotation!"
I love the addition of more veggies! Thanks for sharing Laurie!
Love the soup, follow exactly and have it often, family loves it too.
I'm thrilled your family loves this soup as much as mine does! Thanks for sharing Marilyn. 🙂
I love this soup- I’ve made it several times - all good. I added Miso to the broth because we like the taste. I also added spinach the last time- even better.
Extra veggies are always a good idea! Thanks for sharing Linda. 🙂
This is the same as a Skinnytaste recipe.
Whose is the original? Very good and very easy regardless. Used regular mushrooms due to the price of Shitake mushrooms and doubt it made a difference.
Hey Anne, I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the soup! That's so interesting - I'll have to look up her recipe and compare. 🙂
Can I use low sodium beef broth instead of chicken? And is there room to toss in a few frozen uncooked shrimp?
Hey Katie, Feel free to use your broth of choice and shrimp! Extra protein is always a good idea! 🙂
Absolutely delicious. Easy to make and everyone loved it!
Hey Karen, I'm so glad to hear everyone loved it! Thanks for sharing.
So so good such a good comfort food
So glad you love the recipe, enjoy!
I just made this. Excellent recipe. Next time I’m going to add chicken and snow peas! Thank You for such a great, and easy recipe.
That would be delicious! Enjoy!
Hi there. The recipe looks delicious and I can't wait to make it ! Question. I will be making the gyoza from your recipes and I wanted to know when is a good time to add to soup since they won't be frozen.
Hey Yesenia, I would add them around the same time you add the veggies. Enjoy!
Beautifully made and delicious. Perfect dinner time soup. I would definitely make this as a starter for a service of eight people along with a stir fry or a Asian main dish.
Hey Akchick, Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
With all due respect, there is no way this is a "meal" for eight people. One eight ounce serving would be:
8 ounces of broth
1 ounce of mushrooms
1 half of a baby bok choy
Little more than a third of green onions
And ONLY 2 & a half wontons!!
That is not dinner by any means! A little snack for toddlers perhaps, but definitely not dinner.
I just wish that recipe developers would be more honest with the serving size than worried about the "calories" or the "nutritional information" if, goodness forbid, it should go over the daily recommended allowance.
I pity the novice cook who is planning a dinner party for eight people & would like to make this. What a huge embarrassment that would be!!
Hi Jackie, Thanks for sharing your insight. I will look into the serving sizes.
I don’t have regular sesame oil. Can I use toasted sesame oil instead?
Hi there! You MUST use toasted sesame oil! Any asian recipe asking for sesame oil means toasted sesame oil. Raw sesame oil has such a mild flavor that you couldn't even taste it in a dish.
Great tip, thanks for sharing.
Hi Jillbo, That would work! Enjoy!
I made the soup today and it was good. Although I didn’t find any wontons, I added beef dumplings and it was sooo good. I had to add more water because with the 32oz broth and 2 cups of water it wasn’t enough. I also added more soy sauce to add more flavor from losing it with more water since I didn’t had any more of the chicken broth.
Hi Claudia, The dumplings sound so good - what a great idea. Thanks for sharing your feedback!
Just made this soup this week, used spinach, mushrooms, scallions, sliced jalapeño, wontons and mini meatballs. Very good!
Hi Lori, Yum! This has me craving some soup! Thanks for sharing.
So good! I added sirhacha sauce, frozen shrimp and a little fresh lime.
Hi Annie, Yum! So happy to hear you liked the soup.
Can I add uncooked prawns with this recipe?
Hi Charry, I haven't tried that but it sounds like a delicious addition! I think they will cook really fast so I'd recommend you add them in at the end. Please let us know how this turns out!
My 11yr old loved this recipe! So simple and so flavorful!
Hi Tami, I am so glad to hear that your kiddo loves this recipe. Thank you for sharing your feedback with me!! Enjoy!
Currently making this. But using red chard instead. Book Choy not in season. Using coconut aminos instead of soy sauce as I’m diabetic.
Hi Victoria, thank you for sharing your process with me. It's going to turn out delicious! Enjoy!!
I made this recipe and it’s the first time trying wonton soup. I made pork pelmeni dumplings but didn’t have the bok choy. I tell you what, delicious!! It was soo flavorful and just delicious! Thank you for the recipe 😊
Hi Jennifer, I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was a success! Thank you for sharing your feedback! Enjoy!
What is a serving size?
1 serving is ½ cup of broth, 2½ wontons and ½ bok choy per portion, which is clearly not a portion for a meal, not even for a kid. In reality, this recipe serves 4 light eaters. Still, it looks delicious!
Thank you for your feedback! Usually a serving is about 3/4-1 cup of food but I can see where you are coming from because most Asian soup places serve a giant bowl, which I love as well. Hope you get to try the recipe. 🙂
Hi Kayla, this recipe makes 8 servings. Our calculator doesn't come up with an exact serving size number. I hope this helps. Enjoy!
So delicious! Will definitely make this again! I was looking for soup with bok choy in it and your recipe came up. So quick and easy to make. Just what we wanted on a cold winter day. Thank you!!
Hi Linda, I am so thrilled that you loved this recipe and that it was a success! Thank you for your feedback. Enjoy!
Love the 'low sodium' options.. I've eaten WonTon soup that will shrink your tongue with the 2500mg of salt in there.. Messes with my stomach .. Thanks .. will try this ..
Hi Edward, I hope you love it. It's such a good one. 🙂
It's a pretty decent recipe. But I gotta admit , frozen wonton do not need no more than 5 mins to cook (trader Joe brand). Otherwise, I would have overcooked. Also, you only need a teaspoon of sesame oil unless it's a lite sesame oil. Overall, it's a good base recipe.
Hi Nashid, I appreciate your input! Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback.
