Xerocoles are animals that have adapted to dwell in deserts. As a title, the word hints at desertification and what may be necessary for us to to survive. The musical ideas on this album developed as massive fires engulfed large areas of North America. In reaction to that manifestation of nature’s fragility and fierceness, the pieces started to reflect natural phenomena. It’s unfortunate yet fitting that this album is released as new fires engulf southern California.

Desert winds introduce the title piece "Xerocoles" and persist as musical figures appear on the horizon. Polyrhythms in “Hutton’s Unconformity” suggest its geological namesake's irregular meeting of rock formations. The patterns of “Pitch Drop Experiment” evolve slowly, resulting in tension and anticipation without requiring the patience to see the drop event of its namesake. “Scored Earth” starts with the most gentle side of nature and ends with its fiercest, suggesting simultaneously Shiva-like destruction and rebirth.

Hints of shifting patterns of minimalism, electronic soundscapes, jazz-rock drumming, analog modular synthesis, and even spacey psychedelia combine for a unique musical experience.
