DOWNTURNED SMILE

As we age, we lose collagen, elastin, bone and fat in the face. Dermal fillers can soften and sometimes erase lines and volume loss in the lower face that are a result of these losses. In the hands of your MOBO provider, the right product and the right injection technique can produce some impressive results. During your filler consultation, we will go over specific recommendations to address your areas of concern. We can directly fill the naso-labial folds (lines between the mouth and nose) and marionette lines below the mouth. We may also recommend correcting mid-face volume loss as well, since this is oftentimes the root cause of lower face laxity and jowels. Filler in the lower face typically lasts 1-2 years.

1-2 days before…

If possible avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, aleve and fish oil as this may increase bruising. Avoid excessive alcohol the night before. Avoid sunburns. If you have a history of cold sores, let your provider know and we will address options for prophylaxis, including prescription antiviral medication.

Immediately after…

Avoid touching the treated area for six hours. After that, light makeup can be applied. It’s normal to have redness, tenderness, swelling and itching sensation in treated area, especially as numbing agents wear off. You may take regular dose (325 to 1000mg) acetaminophen (tylenol) every 4-6 hours after your treatment for 1-2 days. Do not exceed 4000mg of acetaminophen (tylenol) within a 24 hour period. You may apply ice for 20 minutes at a time, every 4-6 hours for the first 12-24 hours after treatment.

The following week…

It is normal for marionette line filler or oral commissures to feel “lumpy bumpy” for up to 2-3 weeks after treatment as the swelling subsides. Bruising is also quite common but resolves within 5-7 days. We like to wait a full 2-3 weeks before evaluating for any touch-ups that may be necessary.

What to avoid…

Avoid intense heat (e.g. sauna or tanning) or extreme cold for at least two weeks. Avoid any dental procedures for 1 week after due to manipulation of the treatment area. No facials or chemical peels for 1 week post treatment (facials are OK day of treatment prior to cosmetic injections).

FAQ'S

How much does it cost?

Filler is sold by the vial, and can range from $600-800 per vial. Your treatment provider will work to find the best deal available at the time of service.

I have a big event coming up…when should I get filler beforehand?

Whether it’s a wedding, high school reunion, or other major event, we typically recommend avoiding filler in the 4 weeks leading up to the event. Ideally, treatment will be done two months prior to the event, with opportunity for touch-up at 4 weeks prior to the event (and a little Botox® in there too).

What if I don’t like it?

Filler is dissolvable in the event of a complication or in the rare event that you are unhappy with it. We use a protein called hyaluronidase which is injected into the treatment area.

I have a history of cold sores...can I still get filler?

Yes! Be sure to inform your treatment provider if you have a history of cold sores. An anti-viral taken up to 7 days before your treatment is often recommended.

Is there any downtime?

It is normal to have some swelling and bruising following a filler procedure for up to 1-2 weeks. For up to 3-4 weeks you could feel “lumpy bumpy” and be aware of the filler, but by 4 weeks it should be fully integrated into the surrounding tissue.

What do you do for pain?

We do utilize prescription strength numbing, ice, and advanced tools such as cannulas to reduce discomfort and bruising.

What are the risks and side effects of dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers must be done by a qualified and trained provider, as there is always a risk of vascular occlusion and nerve impingement even among the most trained injectors. Your provider will take all measures to avoid these complications based on how and where they inject. The risk of bruising, bleeding, swelling and infection is always present with dermal fillers, with bruising and swelling being the most common. For a full list of potential side effects, please visit www.juvederm.com and www.restylane.com.

Who shouldn’t have filler?

You should not have filler if:

  • Pregnant or Breastfeeding
  • Allergy to Lidocaine or any “caine” drug
  • Prior reaction to dermal fillers
  • Active infection in the treatment area
  • Immune system disorders or trouble healing
