Outline
Years ago I worked on a small photo-sharing app called Mesh for Automattic. It was a small group of us tinkering with it: an experiment to create trivial photosharing before Instagram had galleries. Mesh was an alternative that would let you share a stack of photos with friends, and let them download the photos too.
Collaborative galleries were where the fun would be, where you’d mesh. Amazingly, we were able to launch on a unique four-letter domain: me.sh. The TLD is that of St. Helena, the tiny island in the South Atlantic Ocean where Napoleon was exiled to.
I recall meticulously designing the Mesh logo so as to be able to animate it as a loading spinner:
For the website itself, I animated the teaser video in Apple Keynote, which was a trend at the time, and you can still view the website on archive.org.
It was such a privilege to be able to work on this small and open photo sharing app, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.
The Mesh I worked on has since been retired, but today the spirit of connection lives on with new team who built a beautiful website with a fresh new logo absolutely worthy of the uniqe four-letter domain name.
