This is my first real exposure to Deafheaven. I've always heard their name in the margins and have always been aware of their popularity. But, this just came along at the right time, I guess. I'm really liking this kind of metallic shoegaze-y thing right now. Maybe I'll check out some of their older stuff but I think this is really good. The deep tones, textures and atmosphere are absolutely top-shelf stuff

Everything comes together extremely well in this album. Probably my all time favorite black metal album now. The mix of atmospheric almost shoegaze playing leads extremely well into the intensity black metal normally has. The saxophone they use on almost all the songs really puts it above others in the genre for me.

Blackbraid is a spiritual force in the black metal scene, bringing a unique perspective and culture that was missing until the release of this album. 'Barefoot Ghost Dance on Bloodsoaked Soil' is immensely powerful, showing me that black metal is as strong as ever. 'The River of Time Flows Through Me' is excellent as well, with a crushing melody and unforgettable song title. Hail Sgah'gahsowáh, the new blood of black metal.
