THE SAKURA SUITE
Notes by Dave Clarkson

The whole suite was composed entirely from only a singular pluck of a guitar string (C note). The suite comprises of two sections, ‘Hanami’ and ‘Mono no aware’.

Section 1 (‘Hanami’):

The first section evokes an immediacy and joy of life. The repetitive nature and build of the track indicates the rapid growth and flowering of the cherry trees. A rhythm track was produced by cutting the C note, looping the result and applying ring modulator effects. This was complemented by re-pitching the C note and shaping it into two light pads. Combined, these parts indicate the Hanami practice of cheerful parties under the blooming sakura.

Section 2 (‘Mono no aware’):

The second section is mournful with a sense of longing for the first section. The guitar note was reshaped and stretched. The music conjures up transience, the associated mortality and the graceful acceptance of destiny. The sakura process is also thought to be affected by global warming. This feeling is also captured in ‘Mono no aware’.

The entire piece was written, produced and mastered within a 2 hour window between 12 and 2am on Sunday 17th May and the entirety illustrates the impermanent nature of sakura.
