Cadavre_Sombre (Midgard_OBM) Musically, Heretic is a accomplished album, standing out as Morbid Angel's most technical effort to date. Beginning with a percussive Cleansed in Pestilence, the album quickly moves on to numerous polyrhythmic parts, with Trey's guitars playing on several levels, supported by the flawless foundation of Pete Sandoval, who masters his drums and his double pedaling with a skill that is still as disconcerting.

rvss.eel The production change was a surprise to me upon Heretic's release, which reminded me of first hearing Serpents of the Light. It's a death metal band suddenly sounding more like black metal, but only in production. I'm a black metal guy so I get past it quickly. Heretic hasn't aged as well as I remembered. Actually, I don't know, maybe it's their best. Either way it is essential Morbid Angel. Also, for completists, the good news is this version has all the hidden tracks. That's also the bad news. Favorite track: Stricken Arise.
