I had always assumed it was staged. Someone in front of her with the camera, someone behind her holding the other end of the rope. Once they got their video that person would let her down. If something went wrong and she lost her grip, that person would let her down. Not 'safe' but 'safe-ish' (and foolish). That it might have been real just never seemed plausible to me. Now I have to wonder.

@Theorettich2007 my expert opinion is the same as Theorettich. Unless someone can present a longer version of this showing her death, this can only be interpreted as early video of partner-assisted asphyxia play, not suicide. The partner stopped filming and cut her down when she blacked out. That’s why the tape ends suddenly in the middle.

It's possible she was alone, set up the VHS camera on a tripod, hanged herself, and eventually someone she knew came looking for her. Perhaps she left a note. Then they would have edited this clip from however long the original VHS tape ran and posted it.
