about

In early 1997, few months of Roope’s homelessness and couch-surfing came to an end when, around the turn of January and February, both he and the studio moved into a rental studio apartment in Kontula, Helsinki.
Known as the “Blue Livingroom,” this 25-square-meter flat on the sixth floor became the home base for future Ceebro and Murmur projects. Weekly sessions birthed everything from spontaneous freestyle cyphers to full-blown concept albums.

The production centered around a Roland W-30, taking major strides forward throughout the year. The sound evolved into a melting pot of influences that had been smoldering throughout the 90s. The common thread lay somewhere in the middle ground between Project Blowed/Living Legends-style underground rap, trip-hop, and the southern influences brought in by stylistic flows. It was simultaneously 100% rap and 100% experimental.

Homeless Beats 1997 packages this cosmic year into a 30-beat mixtape.

The sound fuses the East Coast boom bap and underground influences that inspired the 90s with the deep-grooved tones of Cali rap production. 1997 was both Company Flow and Living Legends, Slum Village and DJ Shadow, Boogiemonsters and Atmosphere, Latyrx and Björk. The music was entirely uncompromising—part of a global counter-current against the increasingly commercial “jiggy” era.

1997 was also about The Funkiest and Syndicate.

The Funkiest grew into the nerve center of Helsinki and Finnish hip-hop—a street-level studio space through which sounds and records spread from hand to hand, crew to crew, and city to city. For us, The Funkiest existed in constant symbiosis with the copy shop next door, Diivari Kopi. There, record covers were designed and mass-produced; the first edition would be folded on The Funkiest’s sofa and hit the shelves 15 minutes after printing. Pure DIY style.

Another space central to our musical development was Syndicate, a clothing store located on the second floor of the Kluuvi shopping center, which began hosting weekly freestyle sessions around this time. Syndicate’s legendary vinyl hawk, Fyrre, hosted the Saturday sessions, while owner Micke supported us with gear and made the “Moments” party possible in late 1997. There, the Ceebros performed alongside Oakland rappers Eclipse427, Sudu, and Plado. Held at Lepakko, the night solidified our connection to California and set the stage for the legendary 1998 Murmur tour of San Diego, LA, and the Bay Area.
