about

6" lathe cut double-sided single. Artwork designed and screen printed by Liz Wilson.

The central musical theme of Toothcomb is the simultaneous performance of a live drum kit and sample pad, where organic grooves fight for space with tightly interlocked synth rhythms. This push and pull between the acoustic and electronic mirrors broader tensions—not just between human and machine, but between personal will and the external systems that press against it.

At its core, Toothcomb is a loop-based composition. But instead of offering comfort or predictability, the polyrhythms shift constantly—sometimes in sync, sometimes at odds— changing just as they begin to feel familiar. They never repeat quite the same, and more layers of chaos keep piling up. There is no chorus, just the need to constantly move forward and adapt to the surroundings it finds itself in.

The title refers to going over things with a fine toothcomb: an attempt to make sense of an overwhelming world where structure can’t be found. Toothcomb reflects the overstimulation, the distraction, and the fractured society we find ourselves navigating.

The B-side, Self-Scan, began from the same rhythmic framework as Toothcomb, but treads a different path entirely—switching the perspective from trying to make sense of the world to trying to make sense of your own mind. Trading chaos and urgency for space and quiet reflection. The title plays on the shared mundanity of supermarket self-service checkouts, but also hints at something more introspective: scanning yourself inwards, taking stock. Written and recorded in the chaotic run-up week to Christmas, the track became a quiet meditation amid the outside frenzy.

As a pair, the two tracks form a dual perspective—external and internal. The work doesn’t offer resolution, only motion: a sense of continuing to move forward through the noise, and through uncertain conditions.

about

Frost UK

FROST explores the intersection between live drums and electronic music. Using a drum kit and sampler he explores fractured polyrhythms, displaced beats, and glitched loops. Drawing from electronica, post-rock, and jazz, focus is on expanding a unique rhythmic vocabulary, blending the synthetic with the organic, and pushing the boundaries of live electronic performance from behind a drum kit. ... more
