I just watched an old This Old House rerun in which Norm Abram interviews H. A. Burnham, a boat builder in Essex MA. It was a short interview, but it showed Mr. Burnham carving a half hull. It was stated that the half hull is carved first, by eye, and then plans are laid out based on the carving. Is this really how it's done? If so, then how does the shipbuilder know that the half hull shape is going to work? Is it all by eye and experience? If so, then what are naval architects for?

Here are some pictures of the "Bread & Butter" process used to create a half-hull model of the Howth 17. Using a bit of modern technology, paper templates of all the waterlines were created from the original lines drawing. The "bread", in this case cedar, is thicknessed to the distance between the waterlines on the profile plan. While marking the waterlines onto the timber, a few station lines are also transferred, allowing alignement while glueing up. The "Butter" is, of course the glue…
