1940s japan

Scanned from medium format negative. Part of a set of stock negatives from a Philadelphia company sold recently on eBay, the only one I got my hands on. I'm reading too much into it but it reminds me of Grave of the Fireflies because of timing. I'm sure the fountain, pool and building are identifiable. View more of my random acquisitions.

Maiko Fumi 1930s This original 1930s postcard resolves the issue of why her hana-kanzashi (flower hairpin) is on the wrong side in the much later colourized version, it shows that the colour image was reversed. She is wearing an odori (dance) costume, with the black outside collar of a merchant's daughter.

These days, when cameras are everywhere, from our phones to security cams in public spaces, it’s easy to forget that the major part of history has passed without them. Only in 1888, when Kodak released the first commercial camera, did they slowly begin permeating our lives.
