8.7K views · 2.8K reactions | A walker of any kind 🙅🏻‍♀️ Why? They inhibit natural development. A baby is supposed to go through a natural progression of gross motor skill development. Sitting > transitioning between sitting and lying > scooting to get a toy just out of reach > pulling knees in > crawling > pulling up on coffee table/ ottoman > walking along coffee table > taking a few steps to get from coffee table to console table as an example Walkers of any kind (walk behind or sit in like joovy) act as a crutch to easily allow babies to explore more areas without having to go through this natural progression. It can also can alter balance and inhibit proper muscle and joint development. Babies get used to the forward leaning position of a walk behind walker that is not conducive for independent walking. What do I recommend instead? Independent floor play with toys just out of reach just like we’re practicing. This is cheaper and takes up less space too 😉 I really do not recommend walkers of any kind, but if you really want one, I would ensure that you are limiting to 20-30 minutes max/day, and otherwise allowing for independent explorative play to still practice and allow for gross motor skill development. Share this with someone who may not know this perspective on walkers | I know that it is so hard as parents to know what to buy/not buy because the baby product marketing makes you think you need/should have everything. These toys are hand me down toys from the @lovevery box we got for our daughter, and they are perfect for practicing these skills. This is a *reference* and if your little one is in these age ranges and is not doing the stairs at the described level, that can be ok! No panic here! 😱 The number one thing when dealing with stairs and littles is SAFETY. 🚨 If your little one is safer walking up with both feet on each step and holding your hand, then let them! Try not to get too hung up on this. 😅 Kiddos can also vary greatly with stair climbing skills due to lack of exposure. If you don’t have stairs, it makes it harder to practice! You can always try out in the community, a friend’s house, hotel, playground, etc., but you don’t have to go out and buy a two story house by any means! 🙃😉 Hi! 🤙🏼 I’m Darcy, pediatric physical therapist and new first time mama to a sweet girl. 13K views · 841 reactions | Going from hourly wakings to 10 hour stretch of sleep took us less than a week. Here’s how ⬇️ Firstly, let me tell you the before story - - First 3 weeks of her life, sleep came EASY. 3-4 hour long stretches during the day and night. I thought I got lucky. - Then it started getting worse. I didn’t have the right guidance and my baby got stuck in a cycle of overtiredness. Poor naps and terrible nights followed. - We managed to get it back on track by the 3rd month. Bedtime was relatively smooth. First stretch of sleep was about 4-5 hours. After that wakings were every 2 hours or so for feedings. I thought that was normal since she’s still a newborn. - Oof then the 4th month hit me like a tsunami. Naps got so much harder. She just won’t sleep. At night, she started waking for 4 - 6 feedings or just for her pacifier or to get rocked. It was almost every hour. I was going CRAZY. This went on for 5 weeks. 🤔 Are you wondering then what magically changed? Our approach towards her sleep changed. Instead of trying to rock her more, or speed up how fast we made her bottles or ninja jumping to replace the pacifier - We decided to teach her how to sleep on her in her own crib. This is called sleep training. Once she learnt how to do that - within 3 nights she was sleeping for 9-10 hour long stretches from 7 pm to 4 or 5 am (then up for a feeding) and back to sleep till 6:30 am. She was no longer waking every hour to be fed/rocked/get her pacifier back because she knew how to connect sleep cycles on her own. Naps got much longer (1 hr or more) & easier! 🤔 How did we make this change? I got help from an experience pediatric sleep consultant. I’m not one to experiment with my baby so expert guidance was a must have for me! She guided me through all the steps to prepare for sleep training and then taught me the sleep training method to use. It was a challenging process, believe me. But so worth it! We used it since day one looking at black and white cards as a newborn, playing with hanging toys and exploring sensory ribbons, and then up to a year with a tent cover up. 2. Water mat from Amazon. It was the best for our tummy time and learning how to hold the head. 3. @fisherprice piano mat. I know it’s not gonna match your house aesthetic but, but if you want to get anything done, this thing does magic!! Don’t even think about it, just go ahead and add it to your registry. You’ll thank me later! 4. Baby activity center. When they want to be in the upright position and see everything around them, this is great! The middle seat rotates 360 and it also transforms into a table for when your child is older. 5. @leapfrogofficial activity table. Hands down one of the best purchases ever. It’s entertaining and educational (as all LeapFRog toys). My son who’s almost two loves it so much and still plays with it every single day. 252K views · 2.1K reactions | ⚠️ open cup practice fail getting you down?! 😩 your baby can start practicing with an open cup around 6 months of age…with the goal being that they drink independently (albeit with some spillage) by the time they turn one 🙌 Here are a few tips for open cup practice success with your #baby: 🤱🏽…start with breastmilk or formula or thicker purees in the cup - I don’t do water for early eaters. As a thin liquid water can be challenging to swallow, leading to excessive gagging which in turn can cause baby to have negative associations with food and feeding 🚫 …furthermore, water takes up valuable room in your baby’s tiny tummy. Early eaters don’t need water - they get their hydration from infant milk (BM and/or formula) + the foods they are learning how to eat 😋 👶🏽 …position yourself behind your baby - you can help them grasp the cup by placing your hand outside of their hands until they get the hang and then gently guide the cup to their mouth. It’s so fun to watch the baby smell that there’s something interesting in that cup and gradually take more interest in drinking it 🤚 ...practice for 5 minutes after each meal - I know it can seem like one more thing on your to do list, but practice really makes progress with #babyledweaning and this open cup skill will end up being your baby’s party trick, TRUST ME!! 🥳 💦 …more info about why I don’t do water for early eaters and when to start is in this episode of my podcast: Water: When to Offer Your Baby Water and How Much at https://www.blwpodcast.com/24 🥛 …open cup pictured is the Tiny Cup from @ezpzfun.
