The reaching vines can slowly creep into the material, and the plant's proximity to the surface holds moisture up against the wall, causing a microclimate that can eventually lead to water damage. Rain screens have the ability to avoid these effects and become a successful modern twist on this ivy-league aesthetic.

Since the materials aren't firmly attached to the wall, expanding and contracting against each other while trying to remain watertight, there is more freedom of expression and materiality.

The short sleeves, loosely buttonable breast panels and droopy collar allow heavier and nonvertical rain to breach the coat. Now, to really be a rainscreen, you'd have to be wearing a better (uglier? more utilitarian?) coat underneath this one.

The Salmela house, rainscreen installation in progress, from afar. The concealed anchors allow for a clean stone exterior. Per our tour, material testing showed that the stone would fail long before the attaching clips, and far above required design wind loads.
