Because of statistics like this, trans people sometimes have a guard up as a form of protection. If you know someone going through a transition and this happens they may not know where you stand. At a time you feel it appropriate let them know you are grateful for their friendship and ask their preference of something fun or relaxing and let them know you are an ALLY and your relationship won't change. This could mean so much more than you know at a time when they need love and acceptance.
