That means two things: I’m dreaming of cooler weather, and I’m digging into my stash of leftover gift wrap, because it’s perfect for printing on a gel plate. Rather than throw it away, I like to reuse bits of wrapping paper in my art. Here’s one of my favorite ways to print with it: Start by rolling some paint onto your gel plate. Then press a piece of wrapping paper into the paint. Let it sit for a minute or two, then gently lift the gift wrap off the plate. Let that first layer of paint dry completely. Then roll on a second layer of paint, lay your printing paper on top, press it down, and pull the print. But not all wrapping paper will work the same, so experiment and see what happens. I think it’d be fun to try ones with texture or embossed designs. It’s festive, fun, and a great way to reuse materials you might have stashed away since December.
