Watch Over Me is the new studio album from upcoming West Midlands producer MXCHRD. The 8-track album expresses a field of electronic moods in UK garage, house and drum and bass atmospheres. The album breathes echoes of past 2-step productions, however the entire project resonates by itself, bringing its own take to the post-dubstep space.
Originally, MXCHRD experimented with indie pop and rock music, but found comfort in producing electronic music for their solo material. They take massive inspiration from the early 2010s post-dubstep and UK funky underground scene, and musicians including Burial, Synkro, Jamie xx and Four Tet.
"Lock Onto" was created by sampling unseen and unknown random YouTube videos, using these voices to accompany a dark lo-fi house groove, featuring spacey and textured synthesisers and crispy drums. The title track "Watch Over Me" is an ode to the past, a track dedicated to the legacy of found sound percussion and old-school hardcore breaks. "Brokenhearted" originally started out as a soft ambient song, but was evolved to a tune that would satisfy the club, featuring punchy sidechain compression and funky vocal chops.
"Indigo Claps" starts with soft innocent synths and a kalimba, later leaping into breakbeat chaos, reminiscent of an Iglooghost track. The orchestral strings collide with the urban, decaying drums on "Bus Shelter" to make a mellow and addicting song, expressing a deep compassion for a lover. "Guardian Angel" is a slow moving house ballad, with angelic, feminine vocals. And the outsider house track "Waterloo Haus" smoothly completes the project on a somber yet positive conclusion.
