Synopsis

Takao Kasuga is an unsociable middle school student who bears a love for books—in particular, Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal. He also has a crush on his class' idol, the sweet Nanako Saeki. In stark contrast to her, Sawa Nakamura is an insolent and unpleasant girl who lacks any concern for school.

One day, Takao forgets to bring his book home with him. He returns to school to retrieve it, but is stopped in his tracks when he finds Nanako's freshly worn gym clothes lying on the floor. A strange desire consumes Takao, and like a wicked pervert, he steals them.

With the guilt of his crime weighing on him, Takao tries his best to live a normal life. Sawa, however, who witnessed Takao's thievery, has other plans in store for him...

I’m not really into reading manga, but I decided to give it a try after some friends recommended I watch the Aku no Hana anime (which I didn’t like). Many people said the manga was far better than the anime, so I followed my curiosity.

Without a doubt, it’s the best thing I’ve read in a long time (though I should point out again that I don’t usually read much manga). I was impressed by how the author managed to make every decision and attitude of the characters understandable throughout the story: everything makes sense from beginning to end. The only part left up to the ...

Mixed Feelings
An interesting experience, but one I don’t think fully reaches its potential. It has aesthetic and symbolic value, which is nice, but I miss having more depth to the characters and seeing their inner conflicts pushed further.

It’s a good portrait of adolescence, touching on guilt, desire, and nihilism. While its more poetic tone works to reinforce some points, the lack of a more orthodox writing style takes away from the enjoyment of the narrative as it unfolds. I feel like the story repeatedly promises something, but it never really leads anywhere. Then again, adolescence is kind of like that too.

I like the unresolved ending, where ...

They promised me something like Goodnight Pun-Pun, and I went in excitedly. Terrible. Weak story, bland characters, everything forced in a BAD way. The hype this book has is absurd and makes no sense at all.

The characters' actions don't match reality, as everything is very random and forced. The art also leaves something to be desired, with poor lines, and few pages with even remotely interesting drawings.

But I'm reading the same author's other work, Blood on the Tracks, and I'm enjoying it.

All in all - overrated

Is the story unique? If it was predictable, did you enjoy it anyway because you like this genre/set-up?
Do you think ...
