This series is literally comedy gold. It doesn't rely on overly sexual jokes like many other rom-com series, and it's jokes are always unique and absolutely hilarious. There is great dynamics between the characters, and each character is built very well, especially the student counsel members. The music is also perfect adds perfectly to each situation.

Not everything is absolutely 100% realistic, some things being done to make it so the jokes work, but it is fine in my view because it creates even funnier situations and just makes you laugh harder.

Kanata no Astra is honestly one of those sci-fi anime that’s executed incredibly cleanly.
It starts off looking like a simple planet-to-planet survival story, but the scale keeps expanding, the twists keep coming, and the best part is—none of it creates plot holes. Everything is revealed gradually while still maintaining a pace that never feels rushed.

It not that often that we get a decent true "Space Mecha vs Aliens” anime, that isn't connected to the Gundam-verse. Knights of Sidonia works to scratch that itch without forcing you to dive headfirst into the chronological mess that is the Gundam series. If you prefer the militaristic dogfight style that space Mecha anime is known for with modern day animation fluidity; and a mature engaging story that keeps you wondering "How are they going to get through this fight, without everyone dying", tons of near misses and a greater overarching plot of something nefarious is going on behind the scenes that everyone's trying ... to hide. This series would make a solid recommendation and a good watch for when you’re in the mood for something with a nice premise and solid action.

Now that the TLDR is out of the way, it’s important to address the elephant in the room. This series is not your typical "anime" and what I mean by that, is that the series is fully directed in CGI. This isn't to mean that the series is doomed from the start, as many series succeed with the entirely CGI approach (Girls Band Cry, Land of Lustrous, Trigun, etc). But it noted that to many people that would make this series a immediate turnoff and that's completely reasonable. It should be noted however the choice for CGI is more a stylistic choice as the manga that this series is adapted from, is the same author of BLAME!; And the uncanny valley nature of the animation style ironically in a way ends up complementing the series causing it to feel more inline of a faithful adaption to the manga. If your someone who doesn't mind a different visual format of story telling this is essentially a nonfactor for the most part.

As far as story and action goes; despite the full CGI never at any points does the action ever feel wrong, nor does it lag behind at any point. However, the Story does fall short at points. The strength of the series is that it starts out strong on all aspect of the show, and including main overarching story, the show does a great job keeping that momentum until the end of the season. However, that comes with the caveat that as the season continues it feels like many character plotlines are essentially put on ice. Most key characters get their 15 min of fame and then become a background spectator for much of the show; or in other cases feel like they are forced to take a rapid 180 degree turn in their character without any reason explanation the show moves on as if that was fact.

For example, without giving anything away, a major character death & reveal occurs part way through the season which kicks off the escalation in the second half of the show. Which in of it self was fine, but the character who was the sole cause for instigating it afterwards gets written out of the entire show and even in most episode they are barely featured; with at most a cut away to them just moping in a room alone. This was kept up for nearly the rest of the series, only for them to reappear in the literal last 3 minutes to introduce a cliff hanger to lead into the next season.

Another such example was how part way into the series there a love rival subplot with the main character. this ended up being a focus of entire episodes; Only for the characters in question to wake up the fallowing day and suddenly one of the previous main love interests no longer feels or acts remotely the same way, with every action being purely platonic between them and the main character; and for the rest of the series this is never brought up nor is there ever a reference ever made back to this by anyone at any point. It feels like the entire dynamic is some sort of a fever dream that was hallucinated into existence in your mind.

Ultimately as much as there are flaws with the story telling of some of the aspects of the show and its respective sub plotlines, the key bread and butter is the action and political mystery and intrigue. After each episode the key memory will be the epic climatic fights between the Knights and alien threats. The times where the writing does fall flat it is heavily carried by an interesting story full of exciting development and memorable fights. The show isn't perfect by any regards and its not hard to pick out potholes or inconsistencies but its certainly never has you walking away from a episode feeling like you wasted time or at the very least you didn't have fun.

Oh look, another artist's anime-girl self-insert by this guy. Oh look, it's just like that other one-shot he did about the artistic Sisters' rivalry... Yay

It has a decent start with actual purpose, an actual story. But after that little cloyingly overblown initial rivalry 'conflict' gets resolved (almost handwaved away) in preference for instant enemies-to-lovers gaybaiting via montage in-lieu of any actual character interaction... yeah the story starts spinning its wheels and sputtering as nearly the exact same overblown insecurity (non)conflict recurs on the other foot to fill the screentime and with even more bizarre nonsense about how 'you can't get better by practicing art, you ... have to go to school to do that.' Very weird nonsense from an artist.

By this point it could've been an average 5/10, but unfortunately, as we fast-forward with even more time-skipping montages, the story falls off a cliff as, in signature fashion, Fujimoto decides to scrap everything by flipping the board, and now decides he's writing a KyoAni fanfic with his anime-girl self-inserts instead and just never actually does anything further, just spinning in circles to reminisce with untimely juvenile wish-fulfillment rehashing dream-sequences and flashbacks to even more montages in-lieu of any actual character interaction between these now noncharacters, and finally ends it after spinning its wheels for so long having done nothing with it, ending on nothing. Trash. "It's supposed to be trash because its thematic of trash." Yeah, le big sad, I'm aware. It's still trash.

Themes and depth were extremely shallow. Depression/insecurity. Why? Because. That's all, you're not going to do anything with it? No.
Almost nothing even happens in this artist's self-fellating story about reminiscing about its story. Barely any of it has any narrative purpose. The entire story and every piece therein is merely superficially connected by nature its (self)-reminiscence theme, which reminds me of Only Yesterday.

The art/animation looks mediocre most of the time. It's often difficult to tell the girls apart because of how their overly simple models are almost identical. The few bits of actual effort put in were absurdly overdone artsy cringe.

The direction is extremely overindulgent, they're really stretching this little oneshot out as much as they can to just barely get to 1 hour for a full movie-length production.

The music would be best described as background noise.

Shallow references to Chainsawman door and Goodbye Eri action-hero 'splosion theater. "Ermagerd that's from the thing!"

All the 4 panel 'comics' by the other girl were literally just landscape background art, that's not even a comic, "SO GOOD" my ass. Why? Because she's the perfect background artist for this artist's self-insert to show manga with story by X and art by Y team! Ermegerd!

Starting this felt like a chore after episode one, but I stuck with it and got rewarded. The Brilliant Healer's New Life in the Shadows works because Zenos isn't another revenge obsessed hero. He runs his underground clinic like a business, charges for his services, and builds something real in the slums.

The supporting cast actually matters. Lily and the gang leaders have personality beyond standard tropes. Medical fantasy scenarios stay interesting. Animation holds up fine.

Pacing issues hold it back from greatness. Conflicts resolve too fast and lack weight. Some character shifts feel rushed.

Its a bunch of short 3 minute episodes about a sister showering her brother with love.
If you are into brocon/siscon comedy you should find this entertaining.

You also have the sweet on the outside but a witch on the inside class princess who's desperate for attention. She often butts head with the older sister.

Each character has their own silly personality.

Is it a great show? No. But its amazingly better than its predecessor. Our characters have some personality and short character arcs, and we have a plot that somewhat makes sense and has ongoing meaningful stakes. Its not an especially good story, but just those two facts set it apart from the original build divers, and create motivation and naturally generated scenarios for good old Gundam fights. Nothing is very sophisticated but the shorter number of episodes actually helps by keeping the material pacy.

Love watching bad isekai on purpose to see how low rock bottom lies, but I think this one is the mandatory one isekai per season that breaks me.

We need to develop a term for the narcissistic self-insert ego-tripping version of the Bechdel test lmao, side characters who are supposed to not have talked to the MC for weeks should be able to go 1min of screentime without talking about him. It serves no purpose, doesn't add any emotional value or character to either the side char nor the MC.

I love how MAPPA showcases their 2D3D animations so well. For Denji, as usual in Season 1, he is still innocent and easily deceived. For Makima, she is always cruel that's where the fun is 😹. As for the storyline itself, it's not too wow, it's rather ordinary, appealing to the normal imagination. The ending of this film is brought to a laughing atmosphere, as if Denji and Reze forgot everything. Can't wait for season 2

This is genuinely written by someone that is utterly incompetent, actually incapable of writing.
It's offensively bad.

Don't be fooled by the initial couple episodes with "half" promising premise. It just keeps getting worse by the power of ten for each episode after that.

It wastes an excessive amount of time on what's apparently completely useless little stories of side characters that appear and disappear in a poof, only being around until the protagonists fix their romantic relationship. It also has some added context humour but it is mostly about being cool. I 100% stand behind their fights, they look cool, they feel cool and that is the only thing that matter for animes like these, one of the best animes of this season which sadly isnt getting enough attention.

I think a lot of the criticism you can give this series falls flat when it is not trying to be what the people that hate it wants it to be, it is just cool fights with cool characters, thats all.

Quick review here;
This anime is one of those "comedy" shows where there is only one singular joke reapeted over and over again. This scheme can be done right, but here it gets really pesky, and then slowly tranforms into being boring. Don't let the "action", "adventure" and "fantasy" tags fool you, there is hardly any of those outside the well known clishés. Adventurers guild, op sword, op main character, waifu, slaves, giant moster becomes a pet, etc.
Pros: I can hardly list any, so I would say there aren't any explicit scenes, nor any irritating character.

As time goes on in the anime industry the regular cycle of adaptation from manga to anime now has a new branch, that of the light novel; a style of Japanese novel primarily targeting middle/high-school students equivalent to a novella in size. Over the years the light novel has gained traction and now a path of light novel to manga then finally to anime has been establish. However, for every good light novel adaptation there must be a bad one. For that we can look at From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman.

In this story we follow Beryl Gardenant as one day an old student ... Allucia Citrus comes back and she informs Beryl that she has handpicked him to train the next generation of fighters in the city. Though initially reluctant when he gets to the city he comes to find that his (predominantly female) students have all gone to achieve a lot. His welcome is not always greeted with the same admiration that his ex-students give him and occasionally through physical contest he comes to be respected by all and learns to take on more responsibility than he initially expected.
I understand that some viewers may find this similar to other shows with similar setups of unassuming male protagonists that are secretly highly competent and they would be somewhat correct. The main draw of the show is the attempt to present a potentially nuanced and adult story. Ultimately it fails for the most part, In its attempt all that it manages to be is conventional with a tedious presentation.

This subdued and tedious portrayal can often be seen in the shows characters, especially in the aforementioned Allucia Citrus. Throughout most of the story her most common use in the plot is of ‘comic relief’ due to her crush on Beryl. It feels as if a large part of attraction is from conventions in anime storytelling; The women in these shows must be attracted to the main male character possibly due to what seems to be self-referential writing that acknowledges the medium the work comes from and what kinds of things happen in other works similar. These shows are made by consumers of similar shows as opposed to consumers of art in general and thus result in a creation that imitates trends mindlessly, thus leading to a cargo cult approach to writing. Most other characters also follow this same approach and thus they are one dimensional at best and tropes at worst.

The show wants to present itself very uniquely compared to other high fantasy stories however it treads the same ground but somehow worse. Most of the time of the show is spent introducing characters that are only used to push the story and when they’re not being introduced and a semblance of a plot is happening it can mostly be summed up as; Beryl is undermined however through combat is proven to be of high acclaim and thus anyone who witnesses this is instantly ready to give their life for him and trust him.

By the end of the show I felt relief, I had spent approximately 4 hours watching this to write a review however as the end drew near there was a small scene with a character called Mewi. Her origin is of a street orphan picked up by Beryl and invited to live with him as he takes a role as a father figure for her, and I felt genuine emotion. This relationship is the only one with a character that isn’t an ex-student and it is also the strongest. With Mewi, Beryl has a real challenge that he has never faced. In the beginning of the show, like all parents like to ask, Beryl’s father begs for him to give him a grandchild and, like all children of grandchild-wanting parents like to retort, beryl asks if taking over his fathers dojo and keeping it running isn’t enough. What makes Mewi so great is that she is everything the story wants to be about. There are no great big demon kings, and to be honest Beryl most likely would hate to have to defeat him, but there is a single character in a very human story that he can help especially with the gentle nature and kindness he shows everyone. Beryls clumsiness and want to help Mewi, which is shown to us by voice-over of his thoughts, carry most of the heart of the show as it is something relatable. As Mewi opens up to Beryl the audience grows a connection to her as she also has the same want to connect. I would argue that for most people this would be their favourite part of the show as it is genuine and well done.

In the end From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman isn’t a show that is going to be remembered. Even in a season as forgettable as winter 2025. Out of the myriad of characters only one of those relationships really is worth its salt and that relationship can be found elsewhere done better. It’s aims, though it fails at them, is admirable and will hopefully push towards a more diverse and foreword thinking approach to writing stories. Especially in anime.

When taking a critical lens to RahXephon it is almost impossible divorce it from comparisons to its blatant inspiration Evangelion. This show makes use of characters, themes, aesthetics, etc that can be found in Eva. Despite this, the show still deserves its flowers for not absolutely bungling the execution on most of it and standing on its own in a lot of ways. Because of this the rest of the review will not include any comparisons to Eva and let the work stand on its own.

Story (6):
On the surface RahXephon's story is quite confusing. For the first quarter almost nothing is explained and the ... viewer is dragged along as things happen. Once things progress and more information is drip-fed episode by episode it begins to become clear that the story of RahXephon is actually quite simple, but every piece is so bogged down by in-world lingo and purposeful obfuscation which makes keeping track of everything tough unless you're keeping notes. that's not to say that the story is bad within itself, but the way in which its structured made it seem more than it ended up being. The ending was really nothing to write home about, pretty much what you'd expect.

Art (8):
As one of studio Bones very first solo works their signature style that is present in a large chunk of their early works is on full display. Outside of the general minute to minute to art this show really shines in the D1 / monster designs where no one design really shines above the rest but as a collective are some of the most interesting monster designs of the era. It's almost impossible to predict what the gimmick of each one will be beforehand, and the action sequences themselves are always the visual apex of any given episode. This level of quality is no surprise really with Izubuchi, Yutaka (director and original creator) at the helm who has credits for mechanical designs in high profile series such as Gundam and Patlabor.

Sound (7):
Overall, the sound design of RahXephon was serviceable and did what it needed to do. Though the ED is particularly notable for setting the perfect mood at the end of each episode. Outside of that nothing in the soundtrack really stuck in my mind.

Character (6):
The characters in RahXephon were pretty trope heavy with most falling into very obvious archetypes. The classics such as tsundere, kuudere, older sister, and childhood friend all make appearances. To be fair how those tropes were used was at least interesting compared to the usual fare. But one major flaw that a lot of anime have that RahXephon doesn't escape is that the characters NEVER communicate properly. If the interpersonal conflicts of characters are predicated on no one ever having a proper conversation, well that speaks for itself.

Enjoyment (7):
overall RahXephon has some pretty blatant shortcomings that brings it down. But if you're watching it for the genre tags you won't be disappointed... probably.

In conclusion RahXephon is a pretty derivative work but has enough of its own charms to make it worth watching if you like the things of its ilk.

I loved this anime. The fights were very well done, the characters were incredible, and the ending was well-written. However, there was one thing that bothered me. I found the anime too rushed and underdeveloped; I believe it could have been better if it had been divided into several seasons or had more episodes, giving us time to get more attached to the characters and connect with them. “Violence Jack: Hell's Wind” is what happens when You finish a trilogy with trash.

Finally. The last movie in the “Violence Jack” saga. It stands out from the rest by having interesting characters and absolutely wasting them. I know, I know, after the previous two OVAs I should be used to it by now but somehow it hurts more this time around. I can’t help it. I’m a fan of good writing and this is not it. As before there is no story in this only plot and not even a good one.

I use the definitions for “plot” and “story” as Lisa Cron describes them:
“What ... happens in the story is the PLOT, the surface events.”
“STORY is about how the things that happen affect someone in pursuit of a difficult goal, and how that person changes internally as a result”.

To be fair this time the writers created two actually interesting characters. A scared, more than one way, tough woman named Jun and a kid that wants to be a hero for his teacher named Saburo. Both want revenge on the same biker gang for what they did. This is actually an interesting set up that could go in a couple of different ways. But… this is “Violence Jack” so I’m not even entertaining that possibility. After two OVAs I know better than to have hope for anything that isn’t a cheap shock. Surprisingly the violence and gore are much tamer than what it was in “Evil Town”. Not only that but the scenes themselves are much quicker. Almost like someone got the memo that prolonging rapes and tortures takes away time that could be used making something worthwhile. Compare to the second OVA, the only rape in this one is actual done with a lot of restrain. A bit too much if you ask me. The brutal rapes of the previous movie created hatred for the perpetrators. You just had to see them die for what they did. This time… yeah… not so much. I mean, I still wanted to see the piece of shit dead but I wasn’t hyped for his demise. At least it wasn’t done in a comedic way like in the first OVA. Small wins I guess.

I was actually hoping that Jun would play the first fiddle in this move. The way Jack was introduced gave me hope that he will return to being a boogie man and a force of nature (like in the first OVA) leaving the girls' thirst for vengeance front and center. Everything looked that way. The fact that Jun was raped, she watched her loved one being killed in a gruesome manner right in front of her, having a body filled with scars, we even see her practicing with a bow… topless for some reason. I mean, I know the reason. It’s to show that she survived hardship. Everything led me to believe that she will be the most important character. Damn… now I feel stupid. Despite having everything an awesome protagonist could need she is sidelined to make room for more scenes with Jack. Even if some of those scenes are pointless and drag too long. She is even relegated to a damsel in distress in a really dumb, heavy handed way. I have no problem with her being captured and tortured. It’s “Violence Jack”, it’s normal for this universe. But for effs sake at least let her do something important before that. She kills 3 trash mobs of no importance and then she is captured using an almost naked hostage strapped to a jet fighter. Yes, it’s that stupid.

Jack does nothing of importance except killing the bad guys and yet the OVA gives him so much useless screen time that a good writer could make Jun go down like a true badass. Jun should have done most of the work in this movie and Jack should have come out of nowhere like a force of nature to just clean up the boss and what’s left of the gang. That would have been a more interesting plot and it could have even had a proper story.

You know. I defended the writing in the first OVA because it had some kind of 80s jank to it. I gave 3 to the second OVA because the idea itself was actually good. This time I have nothing to defend. The movie had an amazing character that should have been the MC and wasted it on a more boring plot involving Jack. I can’t and don’t want to even defend this level or writing. It just sucks

This might be the best Shinkai's piece amongst his other works.

First of all, CoMix Wave do not disappoint me with their stunning animation. Just like their previous work on Your Name and Weathering with You, they served us with amazing visuals, like the sceneries for example. You can just see how much work they put into the animation alone.

Aside from that, the story is great. It was a very interesting concept for sure, and they did not waste any time by dragging the duration. Every second in that 2 hour feels important for the plot. And how they did the intense scene is ... great, the colors conveys the scene neatly, also you can really feel the emotions of the character during some of the emotional scenes.

Speaking of character, let's jump right into them. The main character (Suzume) is a really interesting character, she might feel simple at first but that what gives her the charm. She's just a normal high school student, and they did her right in just keeping her simple, they didn't force her to be a quirky character or whatever, just a simple high school girl who somehow got dragged into the story.

But I could say the other way with the male lead (Souta) I feel like he did not really do much for the story besides being Suzume's love interest, like I get that he's the one who have to tell Suzume on how to do this and that, but besides that he felt like an extra. His character has not been told yet, all we know that he's the "closer" and he has a dream of becoming a teacher but that's it, I would love if they dive deep into his character like what they did to Suzume.

For the side-characters, I love them, every single character that Suzume met during her journey are so wholesome, but for me personally, Serizawa is probably my favorite character in the whole movie , like I genuinely laugh at some parts that he did, and how he fits into the story later on is perfect.

We can't forget about the Song "Suzume" from RADWIMPS, what an absolute banger. I actually put that song on my playlist, it suits some of the scenes very well, a very calming song indeed.

Now for the one last thing that I feel like what it was missing on and I just want to talk about it a bit, it's about the romance between the lead characters, I feel like we don't really get much on the romance side of thing, like Suzume had a crush on him, but for what? Firstly I thought that they are going to have a mentor and mentee type relationship, but after founding out that Souta is a university student, Suzume starts to have a crush on him all the sudden, without any explanation, keep in mind this is like during the first 30 minute or something, and before I notice that Suzume had a crush on Souta, I don't feel any chemistry between them, but maybe that was just me.

Well overall it was a great show, kinda regret it for not watching it on the big screen, but yeah 9/10 show for me, see ya~

My first experience with a work from Takahashi Rumiko.

First of all, I haven't seen the original anime so take this with a grain of salt but I really got the feeling that MAPPA did a stellar job with this remake. From start to finish it's just really immaculate on the vibes which I found to be the strongest thing of the show. It's very old school (80s Japan) but looks very modern at the same time. And I'm not just talking about the iconic character designs but also smaller things like including sound effects in the visuals and while sometimes feeling outdated, keeping all the ... old tropes that were very popular in the pre-2000s in this remake too. Overall I think the show is a visual treat.

The premise is obviously very simple too, revolving around the titular main character getting into all kinds of whacky scenarios with a shounen twist on top. This includes anything from cute romantic situations to ice skating death matches. Besides Ranma, the other main character is Akane. She's a tomboy through and through but has a lot of moments to let her girly side shine too. I wasn't immediately a fan of hers but learning more about her background made me sympathize and understand her more and now I quite like her.

Another thing that definitely has enough focus worthy of mentioning is that this is an Ecchi show. It even includes full nudity however the nipples are not drawn as a way to keep the age rating lower, which is different from what I heard of the original anime. I'm not a huge fan of ecchi normally and tend to avoid shows that are focused on it but I didn't really mind it here. While I wouldn't call it tasteful ecchi, it wasn't really tasteless either and actually felt like it fit in the silly nature of it in a weird way.

I also wanna give some appreciation to the VA cast. We have some modern talents introduced but most of the cast is also the same ones from the original and that also adds to the vibes. Not to mention they still do a good job with their characters. Shampoo even talks in (albeit broken) Chinese. The remake is pretty much the opposite of soulless.

I briefly mentioned it earlier that I while I enjoy the vintage vibe, the tropes were definitely a bit too outdated at times. The comedy is mostly slapstick and for me it's rare that it makes me laugh. At least the dialogue at times was amusing. Another outdated thing is characters being too oblivious or just straight up dumb regarding some obvious things, namely regarding characters swapping appearances. And it happens frequently enough that I can only handle so much of it.

Due to the simplicity I found the show an easy one to get through and had a pretty fun time with it.
