This book had me interested in the synopsis, but it didn't hold up. Maybe my expectations were too high? It mentioned detective work, so I was expecting to think a bit while reading, but it just played out as a standard fantasy adventure with a detective coat of paint on it and a grand reveal about 75% of the way through. Kuso Onna ni Sachi Are is a prime example of why I sometimes absolutely hate the way the manga industry is set up.

Here's what I mean by that: the story starts out with a bombshell allegation: Lemon betrayed the protagonist, her middle-school boyfriend, with a shocking confession that consequently dismantled their entire relationship, including their friendship. But as fate would have it, a sudden and mysterious body-swap forces the two back into regular contact, and the story goes from there.

While many reviews have already been left for this b a n g e r of a manga, mine has the advantage of coming near the end of Part 2, and so I'll be taking that into account here (spoiler free, obviously). And unlike the top posts, I'll keep my analysis relatively brief so that potentially interested readers don't have to sift through a novel in order to figure out whether this manga is worth a try.

Like every manga Fujimoto has ever put out (and I would know, given that I've read his entire output as of writing this - except for Look Back, in ... which case I've seen the film), the storytelling is wholly unique, and for the most part, the absolute best part of Chainsaw Man. Fujimoto's ability to keep you on your toes is part insanity, part complex character work, and part off-the-wall plot twists that always seem to arrive just when you're at peak confusion and think the narrative is beginning to stall out. That said, Part One is significantly better at this than Part Two; Fujimoto's strengths are also his weaknesses, and unfortunately, as of late he's had a more difficult time coordinating these various elements.

The second undisputed strength of Chainsaw Man is, as just alluded to before, the characters. Even amidst the chaos, every single person feels like a real individual experiencing their own inner story alongside the core events of the manga. Their designs are striking (the sheer amount of parodies, fan art, and memes across the internet are surely evidence of this), and best of all, every single character you encounter is quite vulnerable - Fujimoto is an author not afraid to off someone, and this lends the story real weight and emotional stakes that far too many other manga lack.

But even more critical than that, Fujimoto also has the reader sit with the consequences of a character that is gone. So many stories feature someone dying, only that "someone" is a forgettable side character or a first chapter/episode fake-out tragedy that sets up the *real* story and protagonists. Not so in Chainsaw Man; Denji's character arc is fascinating not only because of how much he goes through, but also because of how much the reader gets to see him change and react to his circumstances (admittedly this is another criticism I have, as do many others, of Part Two: Denji is surprisingly sidelined, and the manga's action sequences slowly but surely begin to encroach on the stand-out dialogue and character development that carried so much of Part One).

This is already getting too long, so I should probably wrap it up: long story short, the best way I can describe Chainsaw Man is that it's an experience - it will make you laugh, cry, cringe, gasp, rage, roll your eyes, and more. Yet behind the shock value, the goofiness, and even the outright brilliant craftsmanship of the paneling (seriously, it's divine) is a multifaceted commentary on poverty, desire, morality, war, love, sacrifice, and even things like clandestine government abuses and geopolitics. If you can forgive some of its bumpier elements, Chainsaw Man is both a towering achievement in its own right and an anomaly of its medium, and both of those reasons should hopefully be enough to convince you to at least read Part One. Seriously, it's worth it!

TLDR: Chainsaw Man Part One is an unequivocal 10/10 for its dynamic, unpredictable storytelling paired with memorable and complex characters, and probably some of the best paneling you've ever seen. Part Two retains this momentum for a stretch, but slowly gets gummed up by its own weight and competing storylines - though the finale is still underway, and Fujimoto is known for being able to cut through his own complications when required. That said, the jittery pacing of Part Two and its relative lack of strong characters compared to Part One compels me to place the manga overall at an 8/10 (pending future developments).

This is a tough read. Tons of random techno babble dialogue that will put you to sleep. None of the characters are likable or engaging. There is some light action, light comedy, but that's about it. It's confusing to me what the intention of this series was. It's not a crime thriller. There's no mystery or suspense. No deep scifi themes. It's just random VR hacking with occasional fighting. Yes, some cute moment and build-ups, but just "some". The rest of 95% (or more) is about nonsense. Talking their thoughts out loud, so that someone else can hear and plot devices can occur. Almost every page has at least a blushing or a "DA-DOOM" scene, to give the illusion that stuff happens all around, either romance, or drama. Cheap tricks.

22-26 is not only an absolutely bonkers collection of memorable, creative, and off-the-wall short stories, but the volume is also essential reading for any Fujimoto fan due to its impact on later works: Firepunch, Look Back, and in particular Chainsaw Man all draw from this period of Fujimoto's career. And as far as lore goes, his fish confession at the end of the volume is a hilarious and terrifying reminder of why Fujimoto continues to be one of the most inventive and unpredictable writers in the industry.

17-21 is classic Fujimoto: a work of creative insanity that still somehow manages to provide the reader with engaging character work and heartfelt storytelling. Of the collected stories, "A Couple Clucking Chickens Were Still Kickin' in the Schoolyard" and "Love is Blind" are notably superior compared to the remaining two - but seeing as you can finish off the whole volume in an afternoon, it's still well worth your time to read them all.

Story-wise, it's nothing amazing, and the art can be a hit or miss, but it's definitely an interesting and surprisingly wholesome read.

Conceptually, the premise is genuinely unique. So much so that I felt like re-reading it a second time at this time of review.

The author also made 8gatsu no Ghost, a very short manga I'm quite fond of. Similar execution issues: nothing groundbreaking in terms of narration, yet, once the story clicks, you start investing in the characters.

I'd say: don't force yourself, especially if it doesn't 'click' for you early on (whatever that could mean for you) then it's probably not worth your time, otherwise ...

The MAL word associated with a score of 6, "Fine," pretty much sums up this work perfectly: every short story is just a few pages long, and about a third of them are creative and capture your attention. The rest are your usual run-of-the-mill mix of character tropes, stereotypical situations, and expected kawaii artstyle. But, given that you can knock out the whole of it in an hour or two, none of this is particularly detrimental; it's simply a relaxing, somewhat interesting collection of cuteness that's well suited for when you're on a long bus ride or cozied up in bed with a snack.

mas bem, sobre TGB. Esse mangá foi publicado entre 1992 e 1993 e é praticamente uma oneshot (dual?), encontrando seu desfecho em dois volumes. Veio cerca de 3 anos antes do lançamento de Helter Skelter, sabida obra-prima de Kyoko Okazaki.

Acompanhamos Kaneda Sakae, uma estudante do ensino médio nativa de Sapporo que é filha de uma mulher "toukyou-jin" que se casou com um homem de Sapporo. Quando seus pais se separam, a mãe de Sakae decide então voltar para Tóquio com ela; ... reencontrar a família e o espírito cosmopolitano da capital japonesa. Sakae, que é uma garota "new wave", profundamente deslumbrada pelo estilo de vida da urbes, rápido e efervescente culturalmente, já sonhava faz tempo com isso. Não demora muito, ela encontra duas amigas e um garoto que se interessa por ela.

Desde o começo o mangá é, então, uma espécie de exercício de escrita de um shoujo slice of life da parte de Okazaki. Ele tem os diversos elementos carimbados da "demografia", como os primeiros romances da juventude, a moda, o tema da amizade, mas sempre com o cinismo e acidez característicos da autora, ao passo que esse é o trabalho mais leve dela que eu já li. Algo de muito singular desse mangá é que ele é assumidamente memorial. Tokyo Girls Bravo é uma carta de amor à Tóquio dos anos 80. Acho-o muito charmoso com suas milhares de referências, que eu não conseguiria esgotar aqui: Ryuichi Sakamoto e um programa de televisão que ele apresentava às 11 da noite, Yellow Magic Orchestra, uma série de boy groups menores da época, Kraftwerk, Real Fish, diversas bandas de post-punk, Deleuze, Lacan, Flaubert, Yohji Yamamoto, Osamu Tezuka, nada está fora do radar de Sakae, que se interessa por toda a arte que considera disruptiva mundialmente. Aliás, chama atenção como as referências de famosos são quase sempre internacionais para as meninas. Um galã é alguém que parece com Ben Watt, do Everything But The Girl. Não se torna um mero namedroping porque as personagens são profundamente atravessadas pela sua relação com as mídias, pelas suas influências. Isso, convenhamos, é característica marcante demais no jovem depois do imperialismo, principalmente num país que atravessou de forma singular o neocolonismo, num processo antropófago e convulsionante. Tokyo Girls Bravo é irreverente demais para o meu texto.

TGB obviamente é mais um trabalho de Okazaki que não poderia deixar de pensar sobre a mulher. O que é se individuar numa sociedade profundamente consumista, que sempre te lembra da sua servidão à espécie, da sua prisão física? Algo de belíssimo nos seus mangás é o entendimento de que o ser mulher se faz dentro dessas condições de fato, de forma singular. Existe uma gramática própria do universo feminino que atravessa (e muito) o mero "o que fizeram de nós", restituindo a agência das personagens sobre como agem no mundo e o significam. Dentro do que foi definido pela norma — preocupação estética, celibato ou hiperssexualidade, ser romântica ou ser desejável, etc — tem algo que escapa. As mulheres são aqui, como no mundo real, sujeitos que se apropriam dessa gramática que é reproduzida de forma sistemática e normativa sempre de maneira criativa. É como no cartaz que vi uma vez: "gênero é a poesia que fazemos com o que nos foi ensinado". E Okazaki faz uma profusão de poemas modernistas com o que lhe ensinaram naquela Tóquio.

Mesmo sem concordar com a premissa, acabei curtindo bastante a forma como a história conduz o romance. A trama não é exatamente imprevisível, mas o jeito como tudo é trabalhado faz funcionar: é direta, intensa e não fica se alongando sem necessidade. O que mais me atrai é como o relacionamento cresce de forma constante, com momentos que realmente passam a sensação de intimidade, carinho e pressão emocional. Acho que muita gente que gosta de romances mais ousados ou dramáticos pode acabar se envolvendo, mesmo discordando do tema.

Ajin is incredibly cool. It looks good, is fast paced. There is a gradual progression of stakes and tension. Its story is well written and thought out. However, Ajin is also incredibly generic.

There are no novel ideas, messages here. No well written characters really. Everyone is black and white, their arcs are linear, if they have any. I suppose Tosuke's character's the only one that has anything going on.

The story waves around some lofty thoughts about morality, society but none of these ideas are actually developed enough to say anything. The story doesn't really take a firm stance in any meaningful way. In the end ... the story isn't about anything. But not every story needs to be... Some stories are just cool. This is Ajin. FPS video games in real life. And during it's short run the manga doesn't run out of fresh ideas, we are constantly surprised by Sato.

One caveat I had is that there is a lot of plot armor around Sato. Yes he is immortal but taking down 500 (iirc) military personnel is a bit of a stretch. Also the story conviniently ignores almost all riot control equipment. Tear gas, rubber bullets, stun grenades, tasers, acoustic devices, water cannons, dogs. And tear gas would be all you need really. Get your guys in masks, deploy tear gas everywhere, shoot the mask off of Sato, he revives but can't see for shit. Get close, tase him and you are done...?
Also there is a lot of weapons that you don't see in riot control because the damage is permanent. I'm talking: lasers that blind target, acoustic devices that deafen target, high energy bean bags that break bones but don't instantly kill target.
In heavily protected areas you could use booby traps. Also melee weapons. Riot gear and start breaking arms with batons, immobilize with spears. Just overcome with sheer mass.
And you could use lethal weapons that take time to kill, like a nerve gas, shrapnel.

Here is a scenario anyone could've come up with. If you lock the ajin in an area where you can continously deploy some sort of an immobilizing gas, lets say a concrete room with vents (there are 3 scenarios in the manga where such circumstances arose). You put a couple of heavily armored personnel with gas masks, riot shields and a water cannon (or sprinklers, which do NOT run out) in said room. Then you give those people rubber guns that they use to immobilize Sato.
Oh but he can revive and move around and shoot and... but NO because rubber guns actually transfer the energy into the body. If you have a continous barrage of bludgeoning projectile he literally can't move. You could also use a water cannon, that kinda fixes all of your problems with IBMs as well. There is no way that Sato or his IBM could move under the constant pressure of a water gun.
You do this until you are reasonably sure that he has no way of killing himself, then you tase him, sleeping dart him, or just let the gas that is in the room do it's job.
Yes technically IBMs could prove an issue, but we know they aren't much stronger than normal humans, we see that they can be temporarily immobilized with a heavy caliber gun or rubber bullets.

There are so many interesting things they could have done with the story and yet "find the drug dealers" is the best they can come up with. Instead of a compelling saga it feels more like a collection of cheesy side missions. The characters are far too simplistic and dull to really get invested in. I would describe it as purposely "safe" like it was thought up during a boardroom meeting. A few jokes. Light drama. Forgettable action with zero buildup. That's what you are getting with this series.

Simply a cute collection of the extra Death Note material released over the series' initial run. It helps that the cover's illustration looks nice as well. Overall, It was an enjoyable read.

The stand out for most is going to be the a-Kira one shot. I've reread it at least 3 times at this point (once when it initially released), it's been good every time. Kaju no 8 is a neat Sci Fi Shonen in a Sci Fi draught. It does every Shonen element solidly: world building, power systems, mentors. However it's not particularly excellent at anything. I'll start off by saying I'm not huge on comedy focused manga, but Mashle was amazing. It sometimes masks it's world building and themes of oppression and discrimination through the comedy, so it's rare to get hit with huge exposition blocks as you subtly understand it's messaging. Mashle, having no magic, is clearly differently abled and his goal to become a divine visionary so he can earn his right to exist peacefully with his father is interesting. Although I haven't researched the author, I speculate the undertones of ableism might have been deliberate, if not just general discrimination.
