The result from the ALASCCA study, showing that that low-dose aspirin halves the risk of colorectal cancer relapsing after surgery, has been recognised as number 6 on the Dagens Medicin top ten leading research news in the world ([link](https://www.dagensmedicin.se/alla-nyheter/forskning/topplista-har-ar-de-framsta-forskningsnyheterna-2025/) to the list, in Swedish).  The results establish a new standard and the treatment has already initiated in Swedish clinics.

The system for analysis and reporting was established by Markus Mayrhofer in a NBIS Partner project with Johan Lindberg, KI. “The setup for analyzing the processed sequencing data and reporting to suit the ALASCCA trial that Markus established has worked amazingly well”. Apply now! Oct 2nd: Bioinformatics Support, Peer review track (including Cryo-EM)

The datasets can be [found](https://ega-archive.org/studies/EGAS50000000906) through the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) website. Researchers can submit access requests for the deposited data, and these requests will be handled by Research Data Support at Uppsala University.

SweGen is a national initiative aimed at mapping genetic variation in Sweden. By adding these datasets to FEGA Sweden, the SweGen data becomes more easily discoverable and accessible, significantly enhancing the availability of population-specific genomic data. The inclusion of VCF files makes it more convenient for researchers to explore the genetic variation in the WGS data, advancing research in population genetics, genomics, and precision medicine.

Aggregated variant frequency information for the SweGen cohort will continue to be available from the [SweFreq](https://swefreq.nbis.se/) resource, also hosted by NBIS. SweFreq serves as a tool for both research and clinical genetics by offering insight into the allele frequencies within the Swedish population.

Contracts for handling data in FEGA Sweden already exist for all major universities in Sweden. Collaboration is in progress to create joint processes and define roles at these data submitter sites. Now that the processes for data from Uppsala University are designed and implemented, it will be easier and quicker for other researchers at this university to deposit their data.

SweGen genomic data for 1,000 individuals now available through FEGA Sweden

Medical research often requires handling large amounts of sensitive data, and often takes longer than an election cycle to complete. This means that medical researchers often find themselves needing to store sensitive data longer than their hardware investors can comfortably guarantee that their data can be kept. Also, clinical innovation is often highly dependent on excellent features for collaboration to even get off the launch pad.

Despite having generally very strong infrastructure support to research, Sweden has lagged behind its neighboring countries when it comes to support to medical research and clinical innovation. That changes today. With the launch of the DSP, we can start catching up.

The DSP is the first platform in Sweden that combines secure long term primary storage with AI compute, where the security measures are customizable to the needs in your research. The DSP offers a data collaboration platform where these features are combined.

The DSP is also operated based on user fees, and because AIDA Data Hub is part of a public agency, the prices are set so as not to interfere with the free market. However, should these prices lead to higher profits than allowed for a public agency, then discounts will be offered so as to incentivize data sharing and maximizing high impact research. Paper on FEGA published in Nature Genetics

Each year, ovarian cancer affects 650 women in Sweden, of whom approximately 60% could benefit from HRD testing. Cancers with homologous repair deficiency (HRD) are eligible for treatment with PARP inhibitors, which have been shown to improve outcomes specifically in this subgroup. Previously, patient samples were sent to Copenhagen for analysis using a commercial method. With the in-house HRD test, the entire treatment chain is now performed internally at Karolinska University Hospital, ensuring that both samples and data do not leave the hospital.

“This is a significant advancement for patients with ovarian cancer in Sweden. Our test is not only faster and more sensitive, but also allows us to include more patients in treatments and future research,” says Johan Lindberg.

The in-house HRD test workflow is the result of extensive collaboration between Johan Lindberg’s team, the Department of Clinical Pathology, Genomic Medicine Center Karolinska (GMCK), Karolinska Institutet, and two SciLifeLab platforms (Clinical Genomics and NBIS). The test features a variant of the widely established genomic instability score (GIS), adapted for use with the GMCK sequencing panel. This GIS score, developed by Markus Mayrhofer of NBIS, complements the GMCK sequencing panel’s high performance in detecting relevant mutations in the HRD-related BRCA1/2 and other clinically relevant cancer genes

## Strengthening Protein Structure Prediction

Understanding the 3D structure of proteins is crucial for a wide range of scientific fields, from basic biology to the development of new therapies for diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Accurate protein structure prediction remains a challenging task, but recent advancements in computational methods, including machine learning, have made significant strides. LU-Fold, based at Lund University, provides advanced user support in protein structure prediction, particularly in high-throughput prediction of protein complexes, for example to explore novel protein-ligand interactions. The merger between LU-Fold and NBIS will provide cutting-edge resources and support, further improving the accessibility and accuracy of protein modeling for researchers.  
“This partnership represents a valuable step forward for protein structure prediction in Sweden. Together with the recently launched structural biology efforts at NBIS, we see great potential to continue to grow and improve our joint services, to ensure that researchers have access to the latest technologies and expertise”, says Gemma Atkinson, Associate Professor at Lund University and the founder of LU-Fold. 

## Structural Biology at SciLifeLab 
SciLifeLab, Sweden’s national infrastructure for life sciences research, is home to a wide range of advanced tools and services. The merging of LU-Fold and NBIS under the SciLifeLab umbrella strengthens this network, adding a key component to the SciLifeLab’s offerings in structural biology and bioinformatics, further strengthening the link between structure prediction methods and the SciLifeLab structural biology platforms. Researchers across Sweden will now have access to a broader range of resources and expert support, as this collaboration aims to make protein structure prediction more accessible, accurate, and efficient. Researchers in fields such as drug discovery, molecular biology, and structural genomics will benefit from integrated services that combine advanced tools with expert guidance. In the future, the aim is to also provide more streamlined workflows, making it easier for researchers to generate high-quality models, predict molecular interactions, and analyze protein functions. With personalized support available, scientists will be able to tackle increasingly complex biological questions with greater confidence.
