Dear Reader,
I share here what I like and what works for me. If you've been following me, you know that I can change my mind from time to time, and feel free to comment that I'm completely wrong, you may be right. I'm not running a business. I'm not paid and have never received any compensation or facilitation for any review/brand/site here mentioned. In case one day we'll ever meet, I'll be the one offering you a cup of Italian coffee, too.

xmas, angels and friends

The following xmas' scene has been made with the help of my friend "Dalì L'Artista" (the lady that decorates the shuttles that are in my photos).

She suggested how to set the scene and I found the perfect way to show my tiny tatted balls and the snowflakes tatted with the silk (https://ninettacaruso.blogspot.com/search/label/silk+snowflake).

(Update: read this post too: https://ninettacaruso.blogspot.com/2019/11/tatting-sphere.html )

(Update: here is a short video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1W9G5ltCDNtjIOpGIAijbI1W9UDu2fR8X/view

Then, in the next picture, there's "Another Christmas Angel", I'm not joking, that's its name!
Pattern is by Jennifer Williams. I tatted it because friends of the Italian group in Facebook chose it among others by J.Williams and I helped with the translation and the instructions.

Pattern is here: https://www.cariad-tatting.com/christmas-patterns

It is a gift for my mum, she loves it! We put a small light under the dress. I tatted it with silver embroidery thread DMC E168 (polyester skein). For the head, I tatted one ball with white DMC Diamant D5200.
Pattern for the ball is one of mine (https://flic.kr/p/2hN8Y28)

There are beads, too. For sleeves and dress I used bugle beads 2mm, then for wings I used silver transparent rocailles 15/0, and for the head dress 2 rocailles 15/0 and one swarovski 2mm. I haven't stiffened it, since the polyester is firm enough and it stands alone without any wooden shape. Also, the ball (head) is empty.

About the snowflakes I've been tatting, I've exchanged some other messages with Sue Hanson. She is really helpful and a sweet lady! She found another snowflake with block tatting. She rescued it with the wayback machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20050403221520/http://www.tattings.com/snow2/
So, I already updated the list in previous post.
Here it is:

Direct link to the pattern by Carol Rasor: https://web.archive.org/web/20050215131532/http://www.tattings.com/snow2/snow2_12.shtml

The site went down after that Ron Solomon, the owner, went tatting with the Angels and nobody else stepped in. All snowflakes are by different designers, they are all worth a try, all original and it would be a great loss for the "Tatternet" community if they will disappear. I would like to make a plea to all tatters, if someone can suggest a virtual place for saving all those patterns. I would suggest Craftree...

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and today I like leaving you with a phrase about friendship:

"...A faithful friend is a sure shelter, whoever finds one has found a rare treasure. A faithful friend is something beyond price, there is no measuring his worth. A faithful friend is the elixir of life..." (source: The Bible,Ecclesiasticus)

don't lose the keys (and the tatting, too)

They're 20 in total and I'm glad my friends loved them, they have already been given away as xmas' gifts. The plastic key fob has been tatted around as it was a stone, like the earrings here: "international drop addiction", thread is 2 strands of Finca light gold (Hilo Metalizado, 1000mts, Presencia Hilaturas).
The little crosses inside had been part of the net embroidered last summer, there was some space left after I finished the fans and I thought to make something so the precious handmade net would not have been wasted.
This was the net before I cut the fans, bookmarks and many motifs. I still have to buy a structure for the second fan, but the lace is saved.

I finished a necklace, using the same thread Finca and light blue bugle beads, I also added some little pearl drops. I like it, especially the chain with the interlocking split rings, that gives a pretty touch to the pattern. I plan to make a second one in silver, not soon though.

There is a post of mine about how to tat the interlocking split rings, it was useful as I don't often tat this chain. I tatted using "Method 2" in my tutorial, link is here: interlocking since 1869

I thought that those earrings in previous photo didn't match and then I came up with another pair, much better in my opinion.

In the next picture there is a box that has a pincushion in the cap, I saw this in Pinterest and I couldn't resist to try it out, made from a tuna can, fabric and cardboard. This is the original source: http://1inchminisbykris.blogspot.com/2017/02/something-different-to-do-pouf-for-you.html
I used the wrong type of glue, it smell badly, just because I still haven't learnt how to use the hot glue gun. Next year...

I wish you all my heartfelt Merry Christmas and I'll take a break from the blog, till next year. I'll tat mini roses, mini bedspread and I'll also knit scarves... and I will eat panettone and torrone, of course!

radiant

When working with bugle beads, a very important thing  to remember is to look carefully at edges and discard broken beads, the sharp edge can break the thread. In that unfortunate case, a radiant tatting day could turn to autumn...

Bugle beads for this pattern are 6mm. Thread is Finca light gold (Hilo Metalizado, 1000mts, Presencia Hilaturas), double strand, 35% Polyester and 65% Viscose. I wound together two strands in two shuttles CTM. Thirty-six bugle beads have been loaded in one shuttle, the centre starts with the other shuttle without beads, then I climbed up with a split ring and the shuttle with beads is used as the core thread.

Pattern:
Centre:  Ring 4-4 repeat five times, SR 4/4
Round1: (mock picot) 1ds, slide one BugleBead from the core shuttle, 1ds, lock join, repeat six times
Round2: 2ds, BugleBead, 2ds, lock join, repeat six times
Round3: 3ds, BugleBead, 3ds, lock join, repeat six times
Round4: 4ds, BugleBead, 4ds, lock join, repeat six times
Round5: 5ds, BugleBead, 5ds, lock join, repeat six times
Round6: 6ds, BugleBead, 6ds, lock join, repeat six times
Round7:
climb up with a SR:8/8, *[Chain 8-8, Ring 8+8 (join over the lock join of round6), Chain 8-8; Ring 8+8 (join same place of previous ring)]repeat five times from *, then Chain 8-8, Ring 8+8 (join same place of first split ring), Split chain 8/8 (joining the start of first chain of this round)
Round8:
climb up with a SR:6-6, *[Chain 12ds, lock join to picot in chain of previous round7(chain aligned with beads), 12ds; Ring 6+6 (join to picot in chain between rings of previous round7 ), Chain 16ds; Ring 6+6 (join same place of previous ring)]repeat five times from *, then Chain 12ds, lock join to picot in chain of previous round7(chain aligned with beads), 12ds; Ring 6+6 (join to picot in chain between rings of previous round7 ), Chain 16ds, tie and cut.

❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄

What do you call them? Wheels or snowflakes?

In Italian bugle-beads are called "baguette" or "tubicini".

P.S. Eye-candy: there's a page for Palmetto's Tat Days 2013, with a beautiful collection of tatting (but without patterns), one of those is a bird, the beak is made with two bugle beads, that's clever isn't it? here's the link:

another snowflake with bugle beads

I'm still playing with bugle beads, here is another motif, its size is like a little coaster:

Bugles for this pattern are 4mm. I also tatted another one with longer beads(light blue) and last round cups a little:

It's nice even without the last 2 rounds:

and here it is the stitches' count, mainly for me so I don't forget 😊 Two shuttles CTM. Twelve beads are used in the centre and loaded in one shuttle, then the second shuttle is loaded with 66 beads and used (core thread) from the second round on. First round in centre is a flower with rings, then I climbed up with a split ring, then each round climbed up with a sort of split chain, as showed in the previously shared video (see post sbrilluccicante).

hopes

That's the time good resolutions for the new year spread all around, but today I just like posting about hopes of peace. I think that love is important in our lives, but mostly I hope at least the peace for everyone.

Today we celebrate the Befana, the same day of Epiphany that I learnt it is the most ancient Christian feast. The old ugly woman gives gifts to good children and those who didn't behave would have coal instead 😲 (but some pieces of really good black sugar are sold! You sweet tooth may want to google for "sugar coal").

I hope you had relaxing holidays and for those who had to cook/clean/host, I hope you enjoyed your families and friends too. I've been visiting relatives and friends and had few time for tatting. I spent most of the tatting time for playing again with bugle beads, those are more "snowflakes", well they would have been snowflakes if tatted in white!

Ah! One good resolution could be tatting more of these for next year xmas' gifts!

The next one is the adaptation of a squared pattern that is from a booklet "Selezione Tricot - Il Chiacchierino", 1990.
I hope you'll make numbers out in the next picture. I started with the inner row with block tatting, then climbed up to the round with rings and chains, then finished with the row all chains.
I also tatted a pair of big black earring, it is for a gift, pattern and colour was chosen by my friend. Pattern is from the magazine "Il mio chiacchierino" Aprile/Maggio 2014 (patterns are by Daniela Di Marzio and Alda Bonaldi Bodini). I find black very difficult to tat, but I do hope in 2017 to use up the big cone that I bought!
But first, I should finish the Falbalà doily and start the Priscilla edging. I hope so.

Ciao,
Ninetta
P.S. I nearly forgot to say thank you to Karen who just put a video about those curled inside rings: Lesson 165 - Curled-in rings. Thank you sweet Karen! My original post is here: http://ninettacaruso.blogspot.com/2016/01/a-curled-inside-ring.html

and there's still time

I'm quite sure you've already noticed the countdown I put up there before the title, if you click on it you'll be redirected to the site where I've got(obtained) the code to be inserted in the blog. Nice, isn't it?

That's to say Happy New Year to you all, may the New Year bring health, peace and joy in your lives with your beloved families. I wish you the time for your doings and thinking, not only for yourself, but also to give away. I wish you the time - not to hastle and run, but the time to know how to be contented...(click the picture to read more)

"I wish you the time"
"I wish you the time" by Elli Michler (German lyricist)
And I wish you the time for tatting, of course!

There's still time till the end of this year, for tatting a few more of these:
Pattern is in previous post.
Sometimes it's only a matter of time and of a bit of patience:

sbrilluccicante

I wish you all a "sbrilluccicante" Christmas time! This pattern is my xmas gift for you all, I hope you like it!
💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫

That's an Italian word, it means shiny and bright and glittering and sparkling... Treccani Vocabolary says: "sbrilluccicare: (verb) shine at times, with rapid intermittent flashes of light".
I also found a site that helps with pronunciation: http://it.howtopronounce.com/italian/sbrilluccicante/

That's the word that I like pronouncing while looking at this:

Well, better looking at the whole thing:

Pattern is in 3 rounds, tatted with 2 shuttles CTM, it could be done in one pass, granted that 1ds is tatted like it's done in a split chain. I loaded 36 bugle beads in each shuttle.

Block tatting explained by Jane Eborall: http://janeeborall.freeservers.com/BlockTattingEasy.pdf

Center is tatted as though you do block tatting, I started with a paper clip, 1ds, a bugle bead (BB) and that's to have the thread ready for next round.

Each one of the 6 blocks is (starting from left): [1ds, short picot (*), 1ds, BB, 1ds; (lock join to picot in previous #, except that this is one picot at the very first block) 1 reverse stitch (=rs), short picot (#), 1rs, BB, 1rs, normal join to (*).] Repeat one more time.
At inner corners, I substituted the second (#) picot with a lock join to previous block. In the last block, the (#) is locked to the left picot in the very first block.
Pointed sections: 1d, BB, 1ds, picot, 1ds, BB and restart the block.

Second round:
- leave a mock picot, then for 5 times: [ 1ds, BB, 1ds, split ring:( 2 BB in the hand loop, 1ds, slide one BB from the shuttle then tat 1ds, picot, 1ds, then slide another BB from the shuttle and tat 1ds; for the second side of the split ring, tat 1ds, get one bead from the loop, 2ds, get the second BB and finish with 1ds. Close the split ring), 1ds, BB, 1ds, lock join to next pointed element of previous round].
- last element: 1ds, BB, 1ds, split ring:( 3 BB in the hand loop, 1ds, slide one BB from the shuttle then tat 1ds; for the second side of the split ring, tat 1ds, get one bead from the loop, 2ds, get the second bead and 1ds. With this same second shuttle: slide one BB in position, lock join to the starting point of this round, come back to the left of the BB and tat 1ds like you would do it in a split chain. Back to the split ring and tat 1ds, get the third BB from the loop and finish with 1ds. Close the split ring).

Third round: climb with a split ring 6d/6ds; then rings are all 6ds,join to previous round,6ds; chains are all 14ds. Pattern is easily adaptable, extending the chains' length, if necessary. Look at the next picture for reference:

Till now I've tatted 3 of these. They are not fast tatting but very sparkling!

Buon Natale!

irregular geometry

There are a couple of patterns with bugle beads that I like a lot, one is a bracelet by Sue here: http://hiskid66.blogspot.com/2016/02/a-bugle-bead-or-ladder-bracelet-pattern.html
The other one is a snowflake by Frivole, "Ice Queen" ( http://etsy.me/1u4BKhJ via Etsy ).

I've got many bugle beads and I've often tried to use them in tatting, but those which I got are very irregular in size. I think that the pattern I've been using for the bracelets in last post is effective, because in some way it hides/alters the irregularity and draws the attention to the shape/geometry.

I've been trying something similar, keeping the pattern similar to the bracelet, where I put segments of  1ds, 1bead, 1ds, while in corners I tatted 1ds, 1picot, 1ds, so that I could use the picots for later joins.

That's only a prototype to be further embellished.

Then the box's just opened, there are more and more possibilities:
Those motifs can be used as xmas ornaments, maybe with some more tatting around, for example like this next one:

I'll play again with the concept, I like the effect and I must empty my beads' stash otherwise I won't let me buying more beads... perhaps, for this year, at least.

Looking for more tatting patterns with bugle beads, I've just found a very inspiring site about beading, beaddiagrams.com, the Christmas Tree Earrings with superduo beads are terrific, I added the link in the sidebar here for you to enjoy.

christmassy

That's what my hubby said looking at this:
Pattern is (almost) the leaf of the bookmark "mediterranean tatting diet", tatted with dmc metallic gold 282, beads are "rocaille miyuki 15/0 mix earthtone", two red bicone and one pearl swarovsky 6mm.
I changed the pattern only a wee bit, I haven't written down the differences, so I must hurry to tat the second one, before I forget everything!
I took a second shot, with that light the gold turned out green, it's weird, isn't it?

shopping

On Saturday I went! There's a fair in Rome, "Abilmente Roma", and I found my favourite threads, fabric and lace, I also had the pleasure to meet Alicja Kwartnik with her books and delicate tatting ornaments. A very nice tatter, she has been teaching tatting during the fair, I didn't take photos of anything there but everything was amazing.

I couldn't find any transparent plastic ball with diameter 4cm, I discovered ball are produced in plastic but measures are 30mm, 50mm, 60mm and over. It seems that 4cm doesn't exist! I bought one covered by cardboard used for decoupage (I can't say a proper name in English!), so I could have tried the pattern in last post. And I did then.
I used a Lizbeth thread size 40 (color number 167) and I discovered that I forget to mention one ring in previous post, so I went to amend! Eventually I had to stretch the model to fit in, so I think it must be tried again with a thicker thread.

I also bought superduo beads and O-beads to play with and some little gifts for friends; two beautiful pieces of fabric for a tote bag, printed cotton for purses, one book, and thread of course! I had almost finished the green dmc 471 that I'm using in Falbalà doily, but I couldnt find number 3687 (mauve) nor lizbeth 131. One vendor from Gualdo Tadino in the province of Perugia (www.bergamascomerceria.it) didn't come, I missed their great assortment of thread. My prayers and thoughts go to every people there who are suffering the quake consequences, and it still doesn't have a rest, yesterday evening there was another quake.

I think I can add a couple more rows and then finishing it with all flowers around.
I must tell that it smells! I've carried it with me everywhere and now it needs a shower! Ooops!

At the fair I also bought a cute miniature, a purse to save one coin that was so taking I couldn't let it there! It's done by Takako Kulla, an artist that put all her heart in transforming vintage kimono fabric to create scarves, skirts and bags, her brand is Art Kaze.

gambles

I can't believe that I've had the joy to be nominated in the category of Best Blog to the 2016 Craftree Awards! Many many thanks to all Craftree members who voted for my blog, it's so kind of you!!

Voting close dicember 1st 2016, anyone can vote, not only members, please click the pic to follow the link:

Best Tatting Blog

Today's post is a gamble, I couldn't tat it again because I have no more balls of the same size at home, but wanted to share the pattern anyway, I'll appreciate any feedback.

Materials:
  •  Xmas' balls, diameter is 4cm, mine is a glass ball
  • my thread is Finca light gold (Hilo Metalizado, 1000mts, Presencia Hilaturas), double strand, 35% Polyester and 65% Viscose, but I doubled it to make it thicker, it is like a size 40 thread.Update: size 20 thread
  • 2 shuttles (there are split rings and floating rings)
  •  (optional) a crochet hook or a needle to pass the thread inside picots
  • optional: beads. Not included here, but why not?
 Start with a ring:
R1: 3-3 , do not reverse work and tat 6 more rings; climb to the next round with a SR1: 3/3
Now you'd have a centre with 8 rings.

Climb with another SR2: 4-8/4-8
*[Chain Ch1: 9
Floating ring (with SH2) FR1: 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 (7picots)
Chain Ch2: 9
Ring R2: 8+4+4-8 (join to previous ring and to the next ring "R1" of the centre) ]**
Repeat 6 times from * to **,
then Chain Ch3: 9
Split chain SC1: 9
Climb to the next round with another SR3: 2-2-2-2 / 2-2-2-2
Now I have put a round of split rings all around the centre:
with SH1 split ring SR4: 2-2-2-2-2-2 / 2-2
SR5: 2-2-2 / 2-2-2
SR6: 2-2+2-2 / 2-2-2-2 (join to previous round to FRs)
SR7: 2-2-2 / 2-2-2
Repeat 5 times SR6 and SR7, then
(last joining SR with SH2, this can be tricky) SR8: {2-2 / 2-2+(join to previous round to FRs)2-2 [ring R3: 2-2-2+2-2-2 join to first SR4 ] then 2-2}

Climb to the last round with another SR3: 2-2-2 / 2-2-2
Chain Ch4: 9
Floating ring (with SH2) FR2: 9-9
Chain Ch5: 9
*[Ring R4: 2-2-2+2-2-2 join to next one of split rings like SR6
Chain Ch6: 9
Floating ring (with SH2) FR3: 9-9
Chain Ch6: 9]** repeat 5 times more,
Ring R4: 2-2-2+2-2-2 join to next one of split rings like SR6
then Chain Ch3: 9
Split chain SC1: 9
Climb to the top with another SR9: 9 / 9
Pass the thread inside each top picot of floating rings in last round and "dress" your xmas' ball, pulling gently the thread to close the rings together.
Updated to add one ring (in red)

updates

I belong to a local nonprofit association that has the aim of passing the knowledge of lace, as many techniques as we can, offers courses during all the year and participates in exhibitions here in our city. It happened that an event was held during last week, where various associations participated and there was also a space to display their work. We went, too. Many of us brought their laces and I had a surprise from a friend: she brought a fan that I did!

I had completely forget it! Some years ago - forget how many - I gave her that fan as a Christmas' present. Pattern for the edging is Ila Frost's "block and clover edge" (I found a link, even I can't remember if that was my first source!): http://www.georgiaseitz.com/classes2/blocktat/frost.html

We worked in public, I had my semi-invisible tatting and others worked on their bobbins.
Here it is the bobbin lace in progress by a talented boy just 10yo! He started learning in May!!

I also brought one rings' pillow I did last year, edging is from Priscilla Tatting Book #2

and also I showed the squared doilies in Bosa's filèt:

While I was there, I worked at my glass xmas' balls, diameter is 4cm, thread is Finca light gold (I doubled the thread) and the pattern is ... ergh, actually they are original but I can say something only about the last, this time I needed 5 prototypes to get a "passable" pattern, I was looking for that all-in-one-pass kind of pattern, eventually I got it. But I finished the balls!

I tried climbing to the outer round with the method learned from the rose in Priscilla Tatting Book #3, and I think it's quite good, even they're not double stitches. It is a valid alternative to the split chain method.

And what do you do with your last bits of thread? There's not only butterflies out there!
