Meet Blossom Bear! She's been helping me out with my hand studies lately. Hee hee. She's added a nice touch to my little oil painting project. Over the years I've collected lots of finger puppets... and there will be more cutie-patooties to come!

get your feet wet

$100 - 6x6" original oil painting on board
I had a colour breakthrough with this brown bear at the river's edge! I had to change it a lot from the photo reference and, while using a warm orange/cool blue palette, I pretty much made up the sinking sunlight. I loved painting his little feet in the shallow water. He's happily getting his feet wet!

Inktober continues...

Rhino's Day Out
You can see a video of this guy being painted, which turned out a little better than the last one of my lion, over at Instagram and Facebook
Unfortunately, Blogger won't unload the video here.
Last but not least my hungry friend bear...
Friendly, but Hungry

bearly

$80 - 8x10"painting
For this piece, I toned the watercolour paper with a wash of grey/pink first. I've been wanting to work on toned paper for awhile so, I made it a New Year's Resolution. : )

Toronto Watercolour Society

Super proud that my bear painting was one of two chosen for this year's Toronto Watercolour Society Art Show Invite! Happening next month. More info to follow.
Also, I just finished a three day workshop with the lovely watercolour artist Rex Beanland, hosted by Toronto Watercolour Society. Learned a lot about mixing watercolour to the consistency of tea, coffee, milk, cream and butter!

stroll

$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat.
I tried some new paper for this one. Cold-Pressed! Very rare for me, since I love hot-pressed watercolour paper. I also bought a few new brushes so playing around with them too. I had a great time painting these two friends. : )
p.s. - just a reminder, all paintings will be shipped when I return, on Aug. 8th. See you in August!

in the swim of things

Another polar bear! I rarely do a wash over an entire painting but I thought I'd give it a go with this one.

early on

SOLD

I've been going through a new animal drawing book by Glenn Vilppu. He's a wonderful draftsman and the book inspired me to paint this early morning black bear, wandering out to start his day. I used a photo from the wonderful website WetCanvas' reference photo library.

Lots of line drawing of animals, that started as sketches for InkTober, but ended up as cards I'll be selling at my next show! I think I'll splash some watercolour on them all. : )
Next art show - Saturday Nov. 14th at the Eastminster United Church
310 Danforth, at Chester in Toronto

the morning hour

the morning hour photo image.jpg1_zpsu1bjqxex-1.jpg
I drew this at the Royal Ontario Museum here in Toronto, while out with the Toronto Plein-Air Painters, then painted it at home. Again, thinking about design, I wanted a nice drippy foreground wash.
$80 - 8x10" painting.

Homework - Draw 5 for 5 minutes each

Had some time this week to get my homework done. I set my timer for 5 minute intervals then went to the awesome WetCanvas Reference Library, typed in a subject and used their photos to work from. (The key is to pick cute subjects!)

good morning, sleepy head

Yippee! My bear painting just got accepted into the Willowdale Group of Artists Juried Show here in Toronto. My second submission was also accepted but I haven't taken a photo of it yet. I'll post it soon.

Yikes!

I better watch my step... I'm getting addicted to these little ATC's. (Actually, he's suppose to be running but he looks like he's leaping, which is fine 'cause that's way cuter!)
