Watercolour Class - Eyes, Nose & Mouth

CLASS IS FULL
SEE YOU NEXT TIME!

Paint along with me for this 2 hour watercolour online Zoom class! We will go over the eyes, nose and mouth. Focusing on specific facial features is important to your overall portraiture skills. All of the class information is here for you.

                  Saturday July 17 10-12pm ET
$45 Canadian - (PayPal converts currency for you, if necessary).
Email me for e-Transfer or personal cheque.
😀

In this Zoom Online Class we will explore facial features with watercolour paints.
We'll paint together, learning about the importance of warm and cool colours, keeping shapes strong and then adding pencil for those finishing touches.
Build the eyes, nose and mouth as you watercolour with me!

Some Watercolour Painting experience is suggested.
Please be familiar with Zoom before attending.

SUPPLIES
Do not feel like you have to buy anything - bring what you have. However,

 PAPER
I'll be using - 9x12" Fluid Hot-Pressed Paper (from Above Ground/Toronto) and paint sits a bit differently on this paper. I do NOT use Arches Hot-Pressed Brand (yuck!). If you think now is the time to try hot-pressed great - but it's another element during the class. Maybe just focus on features...?

PAINT
I use Winsor & Newton and/or Holbein Tube Paints that are squeezed out and dry on my Winsor & Newton Cotman Compact Travel Set 14 pan palette.
Yellow Ochre
Permanent Rose (Rose Madder Genuine or Aliz. Crimson)
Cad. Red
Cerulean Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Violet
Burnt Umber
BRUSHES
Use the brushes you like and are familiar with.
I use synthetic pointy brushes sizes 6, 8 and 10.
Loew-Cornell 7020 Ultra Round
and
Kingart Original Gold 9020 Max Round

OTHER
6B pencil and paper towels

looking up

$80 - original oil painting on 1/8" canvas panel
Today I drew the model (from a zoom session, super fun) with cerulean blue. Then I mixed up some lime green and some purple and just used those two colours, plus white of course. It turned out to be a challenging but very modern palette. It took me a while to warm up to it but now, I love the way it looks.

Mary Beard

9x12" oil and charcoal pencil on gessoed board

Mary Beard sat for the final episode of the SkyTV Portrait Artist of the Week on Sunday. It was a challenging weekly project and I'm sorry to see it end, but onto other sources. : )
For this painting, I gessoed the back of a sketchbook cover (hence the perforations), and drew with charcoal pencil to start. I added her pearl necklace because for portraits, I find, it's nice to include the model's personal choices.

$90 - 5x7" original oil painting on 1/8" panel.

I loved painting these big pink glasses! And her expression is so cute. Thanks again to the awesome sktchy app for providing photos for all of us artist to paint from. Especially during these difficult times when portrait sessions are on hold.

inquisitive smile

SOLD
6x6" original oil painting on 1"deep panel

I painted this from a photo reference on sktchy. I just loved her slight smile and inquisitive look. I took on the challenge of teeth (!) which is rare for me and I'm happy with the way it turned out. A friend at work purchased her before the painting was even dry!

direction

$100 - 6x6" original oil painting on 1"deep wooden panel.

I feel I'm really going in the right direction with this one. We all got the giggles during the portrait session. In fact, there was a bit of a sing-a-long happening! Perhaps the silly atmosphere enabled me to paint without 'thinking'.
Super happy with this one.

Lately, I've been missing watercolour. The look is so light and fresh. So, here's today's daily painting.

sunhat shadows

$200 - 8x8" original oil painting on 1" deep panel
Well, this girl was quite a challenge! I loved exploring the shadows falling over the top half of her face, and balancing it with the lights on her cheeks. Also, I worked with a green and purple palette which created some helpful guidelines. I'm very happy with her!

colourful gal

SOLD
$20 - 9x12" original gouache painting on artist quality gray paper.
It is at a great price because there is a gray paint mark, made by me, in the upper right corner. It doesn't bother me... perhaps it doesn't bother you either.
Today was spent with lovely fellow artists of the Don Valley Art Club. We held our portrait session at the Todmorden Mills Papermill Gallery, since the club's art show is presently hanging there. The model was fabulous too.
I may have to touch up her eyes a teeny-weeny bit... but otherwise I'm very happy with her. : )

Donavan

$200 - 8x10" original oil painting.
I'm busy getting a few more portrait paintings under my belt before my upcoming portrait workshop. When I'm not painting, I'm organizing and updating my handouts. I'm getting excited about the class. Just a week and a half away!
Here's the rough draft in charcoal pencil, which I did before painting. It's a mess but it's a necessary step. Also, a few pics of the painting process along the way.

$80 - 6x8" original gouache on archival grey paper

I'm very happy with this piece - I caught her lovely twinkle. : )

Hot Pink

The model's lovely pink shirt bounced colour into her cheeks, forehead and hair. It was tons of fun painting with Opera Pink which is pretty much the 'hottest' pink around. : )

stand up to sit down

6x12" oil painting on 1"deep wooden panel.
When the model couldn't make it to our last portrait session, a fellow artist stood up to the occasion and sat for us. : )
I went for a high key palette (very light, like pastel colours) and really thought a lot about adding greys.

Harry's Hat

$60 - 6x8" original gouache painting
I love it when the model wears a hat. The light, or should I say shadow, ; ) that falls on the model's face is quite a treat to paint.

natural beauty

I’m very happy with the end result of this one, with all the cool green light bouncing around. I really wanted to do the model justice. I’m adding lots of colour on the light side, like I do with my watercolours, and still keeping it harmonious. Each portrait really is it's own learning process. 🙋🏻

sparkly

I painted this bright 'sparkly' model at last week's portrait session. Her hair was so cool, and fun to paint. Again, not sure why but, I love this long thin board size for faces. It gives everyone a kind of graceful long look. ; )
