There is a huge need to extend the operating life of existing transformers since there simply is no capacity to extent the grids and to replacing ageing assets at the same time. Grids in Europe were largely built since the 1950s and in the US they’re even older. A significant portion of grid assets are now at or beyond their typical lifespan. Enhanced and permanent health monitoring is essential to enable efficient preventive maintenance. This is especially critical given the aging workforce and the resulting shortage of skilled technical personnel to carry out the maintenance.
