17th cent Katami-Gawari Satsuma chawan. Toujin-bue (Chinese flute) shape. Of fine, refined clay with high % iron oxide. Rim cut in shape of a hissen (fudearai - brush washing vessel--a shape popular in mid-1800s.Found on shigaraki and hagi chawan in Kobori Enshu style. Few clay impurities. Thin, transparent ash glaze haze on one half; dark brown tenmoku glaze on other. Beautifully shaped and balanced. Style produced only in Satsuma, early Edo period. Tea stains indicate many years of use.
