Sol Lace

A family of laces of drawn thread work with circular patterns built upon the remaining threads. It has evolved with methods and motifs around the world: Tenerife (called Teneriffe), Spain (called Sol Lace), Paraguay (called Nanduti Lace) and other South American countries. Tools: needle, thread, removable forms.

Ñandutí Lace Hat
This Ñandutí lace hat was made in Ituagua, Paraguay, between 1900-1950 and features sol (sun) motifs with scalloped edge and knotted crown. “Five variations of sol motifs with a total of eleven panels make up the brim, which has a scalloped outer edge. The inner edge of the brim features a wave pattern. The crown has four segments featuring a tree motif in needle weaving. The rim of the base of the crown has a pattern reminiscent of wings.”

Nanduti Tablecloth
Griselda Gonzales designed and made this Ñandutí tablecloth in 2010 in Paraguay as part of a lace cooperative. The quality of her work and the brilliant colors are an excellent example of Ñandutí, a traditional Paraguayan lace. The name means spider web in Guarani, the official indigenous language. Ñandutí is based on the 17th century Spanish Sol lace.

Sol Lace Handkerchief
This cotton handkerchief lace is identified by the Art Institute of Chicago as Tenerife lace from Paraguay and the culture as Guarani Indians, made about 1905-1915. This lace type is generally known as Sol, Tenerife and Ñandutí. The patterns are woven on a skeleton of radial threads in different shapes. Among the shapes in this work, you can see triangles, blocks, circles and petals combining to make this delicate edging.
